Why Are So Many Americans Generally Afraid Of So Many Things

Why are so many Americans afraid to hear the truth?

I've tried it: verbally with people, and in writing on this site---you cannot get an ignorant to listen. American culture is dishonest--from the bottom up. I come from a culture where, when someone asks you "how are you?" an honest answer is expected---here, in America, if you give an honest answer they look at you like you're some nutcase. Truth is, that they just never think about it: they're raised like that, it's not their fault---and they don't care enough to really look at that and change it. This is a diverse country--but it all has to be the "American" way or the highway---question is if the "American" way is really so good. I mean, if one doesn't want to know how I am, why even ask me? It is the same with a lot of things in this society. They have sex all over television and movies...but to be open about it is taboo...and when it comes to the media it's even worse....because their agenda is not to report open and honest no longer, their two agendas are to make lots of money and to do report only what their bosses want them to report---

Why are so many Americans afraid of change??

Did it turn out, for South Africa, that "change is beneficial for a nation?" I remember back in the '80s, the end of Apartheid was to bring a golden age to the area.
Instead, it only got worse. http://www.captaincynic.com/thread/25062...
Much worse. http://www.gmu.edu/departments/economics...
Zimbabwe went through change. They changed by going backward. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/...
Haiti was among the richest colonies...until they changed. Now they are the poorest country in North America. http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5hcJ474CjaJGOUznskl4ZgTHdpxUAD8UFQVR00

You wanted to know why we are "afraid of change??"
I just gave you some examples. I can give, LITERALLY, at least 100 more. As for countries with universal health care, most hate it. Do you want to wait 12 hours to see a doctor? Do you want to pay for an irresponsible man's 6 kids? http://www.goldwaterinstitute.org/AboutUs/ArticleView.aspx?id=1573
I happen to have excellent health, dental, and vision care.
I also chose not to marry a high school drop out, I chose to have enough kids that I can support, and I chose to put away a few bucks each month so I can be covered. I don't mind helping out those who have had a little bad luck, but I choose not to support those who are in their situation due to their own bad choices in life.

your move, Danni.
Response: You can have health care for all citizens, but we do not turn anyone away, even illegal aliens. They will bankrupt the system. The have already begun: http://www.fairus.org/site/PageServer?pagename=iic_immigrationissuecenters64bf
Health care for everyone would be great, but we can't afford to provide it to those who should not be in this country. Look what happened to L.A.: http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=34198
I'll tell you what, get rid of the illegal aliens first, then let's talk about health care for all americans.
Resp2: There are thing worse than socialism, as the afrikaners are finding out.

Why are Americans so afraid of socialism?

I agree with you. Socialism is better than allowing people to exit CEO positions with a 15 million dollar severance paycheck, with there is so much corruption at the top, needless excessive wealth benefiting people who hoard their money like gluttonous pigs in the face of starvation, disease, etc.?

But to Americans, socialism rings to close to communism and this is why so many Americans are indeed afraid of socialism.

Americans need to change what they think about the word socialism, for many American values are deeply rooted in socialism.

And if not? Then it's time for a socialist revolution, style circa 1776!

Socialism is the way to go. No country can be both moral, western, for the people, by the people and also be unwilling to put socialistic ideas into practice. It's ludicrous.

P.S. Capitalism isn't an exact science.

Whoa, I can't believe the answer below me. That makes me sad. Not everyone is born into middle-upper class prosperity, and not everyone knows how to make enough money to afford decent healthcare. How can some people be so unempathetic? The asker isn't talking about robbing people with socialism, like Huckabee seemed to be so concerned with when he questioned Obama bringing back socilist ideas from europe at the Republican convention. There's just something disturbingly amiss with the idea below.

What you should really be asking is how can people turn a blind eye to suffering in this world and still be human.

Why are americans afraid of socialism?

Give me one example of a country where the Government owns the factors of production or controls the health care to ensure "fairness" for all.

How about this question? What kind of "quality" do you think you get for "free"?

In Great Britian an medical advisory board essentially sentenced some people suffering from a form a cancer to death because they ruled one of the drugs necessary for their chemotherapy was too expensive.

I do not want government telling me what doctor I can or cannot see. If they can do this, then its only steps away from them telling you where you will live, what you will do for a living, how much you will earn, etc.

And meanwhile, the Government elitists who support this madness will live like Kings.

It's easy to play the "emotions" card when it comes to Health Care.

Republicans have always supported a bill that would provide money to the states to take care of health costs for those in true need. Each time this has been presented, it has been rejected because socialists want control of over everyone's health care not because of altruism, but because of power.

Why are so many American politicians afraid of the prospect of an Article V convention?

An Article V Convention is so scary to so many people because it would open the door to amend the entire US Constitution without limits. This sentence from a USA Today article sums it up pretty well. The convention would have the power to propose anything it sees fit — and so calls for a convention limited to one issue may not be valid.Such a convention would allow for sweeping changes to be made to the core doctrine of the United States upon which all laws are based. The nature of a large representative democracy like that of the United States is fragile. The only thing preventing a singe dictator or a small group of oligarchs from taking power is the mutual respect all citizens and politicians have for the system by which the country is governed. In turn, this governing system is built upon the rights our government grants citizens in exchange for the citizens obeying the government (look up John Locke’s social contract). These fundamental rights and the governing system itself are outlined in the US Constitution.Think of it as a tower. The top of the tower is the stability of the entire United States. That stability is supported by the next level of the tower: the respect the citizens have for the governmental system and the respect the government has for the citizens’ rights. The next level down is the governmental system itself and the citizens’ rights. The last level is the Constitution: the document in which the system and rights are outlined in. Here's a crappy drawing I made in MS Paint of the tower. So back to the original question. The reason people are so afraid of a constitutional convention is because a Article V convention would allow the whole constitution to be changed with just 3/4 of the states’ approval and if we aren’t careful while changing the Constitution, it would be like removing the bottom floor of my crappily drawn tower. The whole building would collapse and there would martial law and anarchy and loads of bad stuff.A convention could still be useful and for my own reasons I think we should use it to overhaul the Constitution, but if an Article V Convention is ever invoked then it wouldn’t be unreasonable to worry about what unforeseen consequences might arise over any changes we make.Source for Quote: Balanced budget amendment push sparks debateMore info on John Locke’s social contract: Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy

Why are so many American people afraid of 'tyranny of the majority' when we have no historical examples of it ever happening?

I think the phrase “tyranny of the majority” is used by people who are not happy with the concept of democracy. They feel that the majority, by vote, can force them to do things they do not wish to do or to limit their freedom in some way. This is frequently the cry of the libertarians. They don’t want to be told what to do by the majority or for the matter, the minority. And they feel that the power of the majority, almost by definition, ignores minority rights. It’s hard to dispute the basic idea. The majority votes for taxes, for traffic laws, for criminal penalties, for a wide variety of restrictions that all, including the various minorities. must obey or face the punishment—fines, prison, loss of licenses, etc.But this is only half the story. The non-libertarians among us, the very clear majority I believe, in fact the vast majority, have a different view of democracy. Properly practiced, it encourages a peaceful, prosperous and harmonious society, that recognizes and respects the rights of the minority. As Churchill famously said, democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others. It is self-government, government of, by and for the people. It seems the most effective way to avoid dictatorships, tyrannies, monarchies and other forms of one-person absolute rule.“Tyranny of the majority,” perhaps, but superior to any other form of tyranny and in my view, the best hope for all of us.

Why are Americans so ignorant?

It is based entirely on the dumbing down of the American public by removing certain "offensive" subjects from school curriculum. Up until the mid 1960's most Americans were very well versed in international politics, world cultures and world history. Then came along the liberal socialist wanna-be's who decided that social promotion in schooling was better for students than actually teaching them. Never mind that "Poor Johnny" can't read, write legibly, fill out a job application or contribute meaningfully to society. We must instead be more concerned with his "feelings" and his "rights". Therefore, we will coddle him and protect him and remove any and all barriers such as responsibility, taking ownership of his choices and actions, and, heaven forfend, that he should ever suffer the consequences of any of his choices. That, dear people, in a nutshell, is how America became over the span of less than 50 years the entitled, spoiled-brat, jackwagon, "give-me-what-I-want-or-I-am-going-to-sc... needs a serious spanking nation of luddites that it currently is. Progressive liberalism being now firmly entrenched, as an American, I can only see this going from bad to worse.

Why US American people are so stupid and ignorant????

I am an American and I will tell you this. I joined the military at 18 years old. I could not wait to leave PA. When I was close to retirement, I wanted to go back to my home town because I missed the people, the loyalty, the family oriented way of life. Once I returned home, I tried to fit in. Needless to say, it did not go well. The people are jealous, lie, and talk the most crap (for someone who is afraid to venture outside of the box). They sit is their own little world and make fun of everybody else. They down grade people for trying to excel and make a better life. They do nothing with their own lives and yet they sit at the bar and drink their money away. It's like being in Salem with the witches................as soon as they think you are different, they want to burn you at the stake. Their lives suck so they try to draw attention to you by making fun of you. They talk behind every bodies back to deflect attention to themselves........little do they know that it does not work. Because everybody is talking about them also. Don't take this the wrong way but, not all people are the same. There are educated people there. They tend to stay away from the bars and keep good friends.

Why are so many Americans racist towards mexicans?

I live in America. My mom's side of the family are Irish, mixed with Spanish. my dad's side of the family are English, mixed with Scottish, mixed with Cherokee. my point is, every human has a race somewhere, but no matter where people are from, everyone should be treated equal. I grew up in a dorm where students from all over the world came to the school where I lived at. so i've gotten a pretty good training that all humans need to work together and not care at all what color skin they have. anyone who doesn't agree with me is stupid! wake up foolish ones! look around! do you see anyone that looks the same? not even identical twins look EXACTLY the same! why are so many Americans racist towards mexicans? you asked. because the ones who are racist are stupid and they don't realise that they are different too, just like everyone in this WHOLE WORLD!!!! p.s.
how come you capitalized Americans but not Mexicans? and also, the correct way to call someone from Mexico is actually to say Hispanic. just so you know. no hard feelings.

Why are so many Americans ready to argue all the time?

USA citizens are raised to be prideful and passionate. At times this leads to their downfall as they hold onto their beliefs and never question them. Since US media constantly portrays people arguing on political shows and American sports presents the divisive rivalry dynamic, US citizens may be found to be very belligerent towards each other over many trivialities. I’ve found some US citizens to also to believe themselves more intelligent than they actually are. So rather than hear an opposed opinion, think about it in contrast to their own, and consider it moving forward, they fight it down and use their pride to peg you as someone of lesser intelligence. It is truly a debilitating factor when discussing politics with US citizens because they are indoctrinated to hold beliefs from childhood they never question. Combine this with the daily fear-mongering done by the mainstream media in the topics of health, ethnic relations, law, and economy and you will find US citizens not willing to compromise in a debate but rather argue and defend their points, even if they’re incorrect. I myself find times where I’m doing this and it doesn’t benefit anyone but the ego of those who argue. So ultimately to answer your question, Americans are ready to argue all the time because they infuse information and their understanding of it with their egos. To be wrong to an American is to be weak. Not speaking generally but from experience.
