Why Are There So Many Fake Libertarians Out There

Why do so many people loathe Libertarians?

Because they don’t like the thought that sometimes the majority might be wrong.Libertarianism, at least from what I have seen growing in California, is mocked for not making the public good or the will of the masses as the most important thing to worry about. The state is essentially run on the idea that by making government bigger, imposing more regulations, and more actively stepping into the personal lives of individuals by mandate or law will create a better society.Political minorities (aka anyone that is not a Democrat or progressive), is mocked as backwards, racist, uncaring, and treated as beneath the rest of the population, and silenced in the political realm.Libertarianism runs contrary to this by stating power comes from the individual, and society is built off the backs of individuals. By allowing the individual to do as they wish without posing undue hardship on the society as a whole, a better society can be formed from the good works of the individual. The state responds by making it harder to do things within the bounds of the law as they tack on another 1,000 or so regulations annually and finding more reasons to throw relatively law abiding individuals in jail for the slightest reasons.Sleeping in the public library in LA and you look homeless? Go to jail for two weeks.Own a magazine that holds more than 10 rounds of ammunition in it for a gun? Go to jail for two years, possibly on a felony charge.Get caught with possession of marijuana for recreation? That’s five years for you.Oh, your a convicted felon that’s in jail for drugs, robbery, and threatening someone with a gun? Plead guilty, get the weapon charge dropped, get twelve years because your a minority member that’s been “historically suppressed” and get out in four years due to “good behavior” and not having enough room in California’s already overcrowded prison system.Libertarianism is hated because it stands up for the least represented minority of all; the individual, who is forced by society to act a certain way regardless of if it might be wrong or done for the wrong reasons, or be punished for not being one with the masses. It is there as a way to make sure that the minority can speak up and speak their mind when the majority abuses their power in order to suppress the minority.

Why are there so many FAKE liberals?

Progressives took over the liberal name, because everyone hated progressives in the early to mid 1900s. They were obviously behind the communist and socialist movements in the US.

They still are.

The religious ones them came to the Republican party during and after Vietnam as the Democrats grew soft on the war. They became the neoconservatives that stole the word Conservative from true conservatives. Conservative does not mean religious or big Bush style goverment police states.

You can tell some of these young liberals are not old enough to understand that the liberalism and conservatism they grew up under has nothing to do with the use of the words pre 1960s. They read books by liars and just repeat them.

Why are so many libertarians anti-abortion?

Cis white male libertarian here.So let me tell where I stand.Abortion should always be available. I’m not about to sacrifice a fully autonomous human for the possibility of one.Retro-active birth control. Should be available up to 16 weeks. The point of viability and the point agreed upon by most Western European Democracies that did not have the issue thrust upon them by a Supreme Court decision. Now the reason I am Answering this question is Stephanie Vardavas’s answer Which I think is bull sh*t. As soon as I saw the word “sexism” I knew she really had no argument. The typical bigoteer response to any argument is to call it an “ism”. Fighting Back: Bigoteer and Empowering Online Social HateYes, libertarians are roughly 2/3ths male. Do you know why Stephanie? This video might help.We are the guys who are probably Feminism allies when it comes to opportunity and enemies when outcomes. (Support equality of opportunity; reject equality of outcomes.)Of the 3 groups studied, we look to rationality more than anyone else. And no, Lacey Sheridan it is not a control issue. We are the group least likely to want to control what you do. The only thing that you will hear coming from a libertarian is “are you sure you want to do that”, as we look at at you about to do something that probably will get you killed.

Why are Libertarians overrepresented on R&S?

Sir Groundhog - It's interesting to learn that Libertarians use the internet heavily. As I don't live in the States, rarely do I come across Libertarians.

But I could personally never vote Libertarian. I admit I haven't talked much with Libertarians, but to me the whole movement just seems to be full of people who think markets fix everything. Which is just not true.

What is libertarian socialism?

Thanks for the A2A User.I like Tom Wetzel’s answer, but I understand that you are looking for a simplification. Unfortunately, I’m not sure if a complex idea like libertarian socialism can be easily reduced. However, I will give it a try….Some elements common to many libertarian socialist proposals:As little centralized State authority as possible - where power is distributed to the people as locally as possible (this is sometimes called “susidiarity”) through various methods of direct democracy, consensus democracy or citizens councils.Greater democracy in the economy - for example, where workers own their own factories, bank customers own their banks, the community has a say in how local resources are used, etc.Greater social equality and wealth distribution - where everyone in society has similar access to opportunities, productivity and civic participation.Non-aggression - force is only used in self-defense.There is less private property, and more common property shared by all - in some cases private property is completely eliminated.Access to a basic level of income, infrastructure, and essential services (education, healthcare, etc.) is provided to everyone through voluntary agreement of all.An emphasis on collectivism rather than individualism. My 2 cents.
