Why Chinese People Are So Dishonest

Which ethnicity is the most dishonest people?

I guess this would be a matter of opinion...

Why are chinese people so dishonest?

I talked to some people in Beijing recently while we were there, about scams/money schemes etc etc.

This was because I got scammed at a little shop by 2 young girls on Nan Chi zi da jie. They claimed they could do a banking transaction. They could, but we wound up with some fake RMB notes too, in addition to the real ones. I also had to order a new bank card.

Most of the chinese we spoke with said "sure, as long as you're making money, its fine"
They don't seem to care how you make money, as long as you're making money.

Where does this dishonest, corrupted way of thinking come from?

Why do so many foreigners say that Chinese people are blunt/direct in conversations? I thought Chinese culture is non-confrontational.

Think there are some truth into it. The education I received in China is quite blunt and direct, good vs bad, right vs wrong, revolutionary vs anti…. After living in western world, I realize myself is too blunt and undiplomatic in business, which hurt my career in a significant way. Even when I worked in Africa just few years back, I start to learned a great deal of things like protocols, etc. just to address people properly in different circumstances…. still not there, and need to adjust and improve. At one time, I went back to China and hired 5 RMs for my bank, they are all well educated, way better behaved than average. Still, once they arrived in Kenya, I had to pull them into the board room one day, close the door, and show them how to greet people and shake hands. They didn’t resist and learned quickly…In business, especially in corporate world, using the proper words, knowing what to say, to who, at what circumstances are important… those concepts are foreign to most Chinese, even at the highest educated level. What they learned is “truth, nothing (else) but truth”. So people wondering why Indians can become CEOs, Chinese can only be a proud senior tech lead. This not only affects ones’ career path, but the overall culture that unsuitablity for democracy. Since everyone fight so hard on what they believe is right, paying little attention to how others perceive the message…I am sure my comment will alienate many fellow Chinese, but allow me to return to my blunt root for a moment: the revolution wiped out the whole upper class in our motherland, it would take few decades for the newly rich to find some enlightenment and start defending etiquette, etc. Until then, many may not even know what others mean by “blunt and direct”.==== update ====Don’t just blame regular Chinese, looking at our diplomats, ministers, most of them (I mean it) only speak English suitable for street fight. I sit in a meeting with one of them in a small group, and frankly felt total embarrassed and humiliated. I also run into other countries diplomats once a while on business flights, they can outclass Chinese official without even trying.

Why are Hong Kong people Ashamed to call themselves from China...?

I cant speak for Hongkongers, I do not believe they're ashamed of "China" though, the 70 million Chinese living outside of the Mainland including Taiwanese, Singaporeans and Malaysian Chinese, nonewhosoever wishes to be mistaken as Mainlander esp Taiwanese. 9 out of 10 Singaporeans I talked to do not like Mainlanders. Who would wish to be associated with a whole lot of rude, ruthless, immoral and dishonest bunch that is willing to do anything just to gain a few extra RMB?

Many mainlanders like the one above thinks that money and modern skyline are everything, yeah, building high rises, roads and bridges do not take long at all but cultivating a responsible, honest and ethical society takes generations of hard work (1 generation = 25 to 30 years).

Mandy M, Shenzhen and HK's neighboring cities' residents watch HK televisions, listen to HK radios, travel frequently to HK, have a lot more interactions with HK people, it's a trend in those places for people to mock up as Hongkongers including the openness in criticising govt. and law-abiding. The farther away from HK especially in the north, you'll appreciate more the comments regarding Mainlanders behaviors as listed on here.

Mainland China only started turning to a better and prosperous place after the turn of the 21st century, the holding of the Olympics in particular helps tremendously in its improvements. Even before 2004/5 walking down on the streets in downtown Shanghai and Beijing at night, everywhere was dark and deadly quiet except the bar areas.

When HK's still under the British ie before 1997, the living standard of the majority inside China was comparable to people of Afghanistan or even Somalia, it's therefore not surprised to be considered 3rd class citizens to communicate in say Somalia's language, would you?

Why is it so hard to do business with Chinese?

Working in China I have noticed a few things about business in ChinaIt’s pretty easy to start a business in China and I think that there are many businesses started by people that really don't know how to run a business. Also, a lot of business in China is based on relationships. For instance. Person B knows person C who makes widgets. Person B knows Person A who knows someone who wants to Buy widgets. Voila Person B and Person A start a business to sell the Widgets. None of them really know anything about running a business.I have tried to buy products from reputable companies and I have asked for quotes and specs, etc...I find the sales people have almost no knowledge about what they are selling. The quote that you get may just be a simple email or even text message with a price. No description of what the price is for. No terms. No specs. This is from high tech companies that are fairly large.Next, Chinese companies want orders for big quantities. If you are not ordering big quantities you will either get no response or if they do business with you then you are not a priority. Then there is language. This barrier to doing business is understandable and can be solved with good documentation. The last item on my list is that Chinese are always looking to make more money. So if they can save .5 rmb by cutting the quality a bit, chances are really good that they will do it. I think the mentality is different from the West. Westerners think saving 10 cents on the production of my product is not worth the aggravation of getting a complaint or a returned product. It seems that a Chinese business man is perfectly willing to put up with this aggravation to make more money. It’s just a different way of looking at things.I don't mean any of the above to be critical or to be negative. It is just my observation after being here and doing business here for the last 5+ years. It's funny that even Chinese don't trust other Chinese companies to provide quality goods over the long term. That is not to say that there are not quality supplier in China, there certainly are, but there are so many businesses here that you have to really sift through a lot of companies to find the good ones.
