Why Didnt Britain Have Lots Of Immigrants Before 1940

Why didn't Great Britain return Canada to France after it returned Florida to Spain?

As a condition of the French-American Alliance in 1778, France formally renounced territorial claims to Canada. The Americans had ambitions there, and France had little to gain from that fur trading outpost. The French were much more interested in recapturing their profitable Caribbean colonies. They did get some fishing rights in Terranova and some territories in the Antilles.

If the Pilgrims came from England, why did their accents change?

Many of the Pilgrims were living in Germany for religious reasons when the decision was made to immigrate to America. So the English accent had probably already started to diminish. There is also probably a lot of Spanish influence in the American accent.

The French and the English settled Canada and the Canadian accent is somewhat different from the U. S. accent. In fact, if you visit Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, you will see that they all have accents that are different than the British even though all were settled by the British.

Now that I think of it, the accents from the American west, south and east coast new england are all different. You can even tell the difference it accents between someone from Boston and someone from New York, and the two cities are only a few hundred miles apart.

Hope I helped,

Should there be a UK amnesty for anyone who arrived in Britain from a commonwealth country between 1945 and 1971?

Yes, there should be an amnesty. The Home Office apparently like soft targets in their campaign to reduce “immigration”. Elderly people who came from the Caribbean with minimal documentation 50 or 60 years ago can easily be tied in bureaucratic tape.Demands for documentary proof should be tempered with common sense, and obviously, humanity. Those who emigrated from other places to Britain in the 1940s, 1950s, or 60s followed whatever procedures were in place at that time. They shouldn’t be held retrospectively responsible for not having the kind of documentation that would be required today. In many cases, those involved have British children and grandchildren. That should be sufficient proof of legal residence. (Of course, those without children should also be treated fairly.)These cases are increasing and are not anomalous. There are also EU citizens etc. who have problems with the Home Office. We have a Home Secretary who is not taking responsibility for these decisions. In my view, there needs to be an independent enquiry into the Home Office, to recommend sound and sensible procedures for the department which are in line with normal British standards.See also Amnesty for anyone who was a minor that arrived In Britain between 1948 to 1971Update: the following explains more background to this issue: Caribbean nations demand solution to 'illegal immigrants' anomaly
