How do you convince somebody that Homeopathy doesn't work?

The aformentioned overdose demonstration is very, very, very good. James Randi does it as a part of his regular speeches on the ridiculousness of homeopathy:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vY3-XNttn...

Taking a whole bottle of whatever in front of them and not dying is...a pretty good argument for it being BS. : ) Ever notice how there are no homeopathic remedies for overdosing on homeopathic medicine?

Also, I'd recommend the skeptoid podcast on the topic:

http://skeptoid.com/audio/skeptoid-4113....

A good history on the topic and how it's....very akin to goat sacrifice as a means of becoming well.

The Darwin story parroters: It really doesn't matter what one man in the 1800s took, said or did....what matters is evidence. Evolution had it. Homeopathy has none. Honestly people, do I have to invoke that lesson we all learned in grade school? If X person walked off a cliff, would you do it too? Fifth graders know the answer to that one...you apparently don't.

Lastly, I'll link what I probably should have linked first....a "what to do" guide for when you have a friend who believes in Woo.

(Woo is skeptic slang for magical thinking)

http://skeptoid.com/audio/skeptoid-4187....

You need to ask yourself if this belief is really harmful to them. If they're forsaking Western (Real) Medicine for this crap, then yes, its harmful.....but if they just occasionally buy homeononsense sugar pills at the local paga-vegan health foo store every now and again.....it's not worth losing a friendship over.

If you need to dissuade them, for the good of your friend or their family, just remember: Treat it like you're going after their religion--it's not something to go about doing casually. Know which battles to fight.

Do you think technology (internet, computers, smartphones, etc) causes ADHD?

No.Those things do tend toward developing a habit of a shortened attention span, and they may set up an intense desire for instant gratification. So that might make a person whose brain does not have ADHD look a little like they have A DHD.But I am thoroughly convinced that ADHD is a genetic condition that people are born with. I think it has certain survival characteristics— we make great hunter gatherers because we are alert to things on the periphery when our brains are in ping- pong mode. We may make good explorers— if you look at the career of Daniel Boone you will see a great explorer who failed miserably at responsible record keeping— that has made people think ADHD.Maybe America had a disproportionate number of ADHD settlers— people who got into some sort of trouble at home, people who were willing to leave the settled life at home and come do something NEW.ADHD is not so much a defect as it is an adaptive characteristic which functions as a flaw in the modern world. So it can be very useful to put on our “brain glasses” and take the appropriate meds so that we can do modern life better. But don’t blame ADHD on modern technology. I for one had it long before.

What are the best answers for "Why should I hire you"?

Following happened last week during my interview for internship at Microsoft.A little background - It was the third round of interview, which was the HR round. I had performed well in previous two technical interview rounds. But being a non computer science student with no experience with any projects or internships in programming, I had faced my difficulties in answering questions that demanded previous projects/experience.Interviewer - So, Sumit, this is the final question for you. Why should we hire you? Why Microsoft?Me - *thinks for a moment* Sir, shall I give you the answer that I prepared or shall I give you an honest answer?Interviewer - I can listen to them both.Me - I will start with the one I prepared. Sir, you should hire me because even though I do not have any prior experience, I do have the ability to learn and perform. And whatever would be expected of me at Microsoft, I would certainly deliver it with my best abilities and hard work.Interviewer - Impressive. And what’s the honest answer?Me - Sir, 19 years ago, Microsoft created a game named Age of Empires. I am sure you have heard the name. And it’s more than just a video game. It actually requires you to think analytically and come up with the best combinations and timings of your army units to win. Sir when I was really depressed last year, I used to play this game day and night. I used to look up to this game as a challenge. I did all the research, I knew all the civilizations and the best algorithms for all the maps. Sir, not only this game saved me from doing something stupid, it also kept my analytical thinking alive. Had I taken some other bad habit to vent out my depression, I would have thoroughly screwed my life. Sir, I want to create something so simple and yet so amazing like that game. And that’s why Microsoft should hire me.He had a wide grin on his face by the time I ended my short speech.Interviewer - Sumit you are certainly creative. Any questions for us?Me - Am I selected? He gave me the most wonderful smile and said “It’s a yes from my side, we will just have to look at your technical rounds performance.”And later that evening, my friend Ayush Tabhane woke me up from a deep sleep after a long day as he shouted “Microsoft results are out. You’re selected!!!”
