Why Do Drummers Think Its Okay To Criticize Other Drummers

What do drummers think of the movie Whiplash?

Whiplash Got It All Wrong!Movies about musicians offer musical approximations that usually satisfy in inverse proportion to a viewer’s devotion to the actual music behind the story. Whiplash turned out to be one such example. From past 6 months, I was being suggested to watch Whiplash because my friends thought I would love it. My MustWatchMovies list was so long that today, I finally watched it after 6 months of being told about it for the first time. You guessed it right from the title of this blog, I didn’t like the movie, let alone loving it. Miles has done a credible job of playing the protagonist. I really liked Terence Fletcher’s role as the authoritarian leader of the school’s concert band and an ostensible career maker. And ironically, this is the same place where I lost the movie.I don’t know the claims of director and producer for this movie. But if they had claimed to make a movie to show the real behind the scenes of a music school, it’s astonishingly far from reality.Smacking somebody's face on beat four.Instructor throwing the floor tom just because of the slow tempo.Trying to raise the capability to increase the tempo by trying to play as fast as possible and forgetting the fuck about music.Instructor classifying musicians as core members and alternates and asking the alternates to clean off the blood shed by core.I have been professionally trained in music. I have enough background in Music theory and percussion instruments to vouch for the process of learning music and what’s the real meaning of musicality. It’s really sad that Whiplash got it all wrong. It's never about pursuing a kid to get faster till the time he/she bleeds. This is what leads to burning out and eventually leaving the thing you actually loved and could have done so much better, had you been blessed with a fine instructor.Stopping rehearsal every two seconds to address tempo. I mean really?Increasing the tempo involves getting the metronome up and gradually increase it till the time it goes to the muscle memory. It can never be increased in 30 minutes with instructor sucking the blood out of your head.If the movie really wanted to promote perseverance and hard work, music wasn’t a very good choice of topic for that. That’s what I feel. Music is an art.Go-you-motherfucker-suck-on-that-drum-throne attitude simply doesn’t work in music.Nevertheless, movie was fun to watch but I felt the principles being showcased to be insanely wrong.

How can a drummer think Luke Holland is awful?

I have a friend on Facebook who is in his mid to late 20's and he's been drumming for most of his life. (At least 10 or more years but that's just a guess) I know he's been drumming most of his life but I don't know exactly how long.

Anyway, he said (loosely quoting) "Luke Holland is awful. I can't stand his drumming."

I've only been drumming for about 2 years but I don't see anything awful about his drumming. And he didn't specify. I asked him why but he didn't comment back. The only thing I notice is is ocasscionally messy fills but that's about it. Maybe he means his style is awful? Because he can definitely play.

Why does my brother always criticize the music I listen to?

So, I was watching The Doors performing their song, The End on Youtube then my brother comes out of nowhere and says that their gay. Then I ask him to tell me why? Then he says this : "Drums. What is that? It's like it, they just hit the thing hella hard. It's just sound. And um.. and they dress seriously. Hella gay. And... uh.. they sing all soft. And crying, saying, 'society hates me'." My other brother then says, "What about about The Beatles?" My brother, "Same sh*t. And... um, mmm, yeah, and all they care about sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll. And they don't take showers. What else? They can't fit into society. And, they people who listen to them, all in their room, all dark, and hair over their face, they think they're cool. And... and... the songs they listen to tell them to rebel against the community and their peers."

I hate him! He's always doing this! I never criticize the music HE listens to! Then he says, "Lil Wayne is cool." AHHH!!!!! I FEEL LIKE PUNCHING HIM IN THE FACE!

Is Meg White a bad drummer?

Every single time someone comes up asking if a well-known pro is a “bad” musician, I can’t help but cringe.OK, there are some incredible exceptions - such as Lars Ulrich or Keith Richards, who are just objectively plain bad. Exceptions are there to prove the rule… ;)And the rule is… amateurs are easily fooled into judging art by the complexity of it *on paper*. Simple doesn’t mean easy - at all.A martial art master won’t pull a B movie choreography to get an opponent down… right? The same is true of most master musicians. They don’t need to impress people with virtuosity. That’s not what they’re paying to listen to anyway.Meg White is a good pro drummer. She gets the *job done*. It’s incredible to me, especially concerning drumming, that some still equal simplicity as not being “good”.What do you ask from a drummer? To bet tight, always. To have a good groove, a good dynamic, and to be extremely consistent. Speed is irrelevant in 90% of what you will ever play.*In fact, playing a slow beat is harder, because you have more space in between each strokes. And playing simple takes a lot of restraint. The more silent space you have between each strokes, the harder it is to keep time.*Now, do this relentlessly, night after night, while traveling the globe, to a high standard, in front of ten of thousands of people.Constantly.Now you know why some of the most talented virtuosos will never get a job in this industry. We’re fed up of talented people who think they’re better than pros because they can go faster and play more complex stuff…*That is NOT what the JOB is all about.*Sorry. And a lot of pros can outdo an amateur at speed too, in fact, it’s just an easy gimmick after awhile and it doesn’t impress anyone but the crowd for about a minute, after which it gets on people nerves. If you don’t play with a click *without hearing it* on 2 and 4 (yes, it is possible), consistently, you’re not tight enough yet.Forget about that double-tripe-paradadidlelidlely-twist in 11/16 if you can’t be *right on*, night after night after night… after night… ;)And THIS is MUCH more difficult than shedding Zappa’s songs in your backyard. Some people need to hear this.

Can my drumming hurt my rabbit's hearing?

yes it could affect the rabbits hearing. As you could see rabbits have bigger ears then people if the drum is loud for us, then think how loud it will be for the rabbit. Rabbits could hear a person walking from 50m away. So yeah it will most likely affect his hearing. So prevent that from happening you could put drum pads on the drums, that makes it a whole lot quieter. I did that to my drums and i think it helped my hearing too. Or if you like the loud sould you could move the rabbit into another room or even outside. A rabbit wont die outside. As long as you have a lot of straw in the cage. I had a rabbit outside before and he survived. So hope i helped. Bye.
