Why Do People Say Genetics Or Disease Can Cause Obesity

What's your opinion about obesity? Choice or Disease?

Thank you really great question, and my answer is my own theory,no proof.
I believe that we as humans carry around all the genes or what have you to develop every illness known, and unknown to man,so we are carrying around all the potential seeds,(disease) and a lot of the time it is by our very act of living. breathing, eating, working, that we encounter the activator of the seeds, for example it has been proved if you smoke cigarettes, or inhale certain substances are very likely to develop cancer. But some people do not develop cancer after years of smoking or working in toxic environments Why? again my answer.again it has to do with the body's ability to sort out the good from the harmful, As to you question about obesity. Yes you could classify it as a disease, But as with smoking it is a self induced disease, because we have the choice to teach and learn what is good and what is not.We have choices, and because we make wrong or bad choices, we harm our selves. I think I understand where you are coming from if obesity is classified as a disease, then several thing could happen, One- people would use it as an excuse for not taking personal responsibility for their ignorance on what causes obesity. Two the government would possibly be over come with people requesting disability, and I believe that may be already going on.Three, that the drug companies might have another cash cow to distribute drugs for a disease.
So I believe that obesity is a disease, and the cure is Education, rewards for doing the right thing for instance 12-15 hours of exercise a week, no taxes on healthy food, and tax the living daylights out of junk and fat causing foods.I believe that we have come to expect our government to take us by the hand and get us out of a mess, and that would work if it was reward the good. and tax the bad, because right now it is the opposite. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to vent

Why do people say obesity is a disease?

Obesity is a disease... No body gets that size from starving. Most people who are obease fall into 2 main cateorgies. #1 genetics and #2 some type of psycological thing where they must eat.

People who are obese LOVE TO EAT, its an obession (disease). When they are upset they eat a whole bag of chips with 2 large pizza's because its comfort for them it makes them feel good some how. It's called a disease because its a psychological problem that is treatable with professional help. Most people who are obese have been overweight since childhood, they've been battling it for such a long time, people stare at them weird and disgusted, they get teased and name called a lot. So they develop self esteem problems, they cant go shopping to ease the pain it makes them feel worse, they can't play sports to make them forget about what happened, a lot of them hardly have friends because of their size, they can't take a stroll in the park without fear of someone saying something, so all they eat and watch tv to cope with their problem.

The Web version of Miriam Webster says this as the second entry under disease:"a condition of the living animal or plant body or of one of its parts that impairs normal functioning and is typically manifested by distinguishing signs and symptoms"The key words here a "impairs normal functioning" and "distinguishing signs and symptoms".I would argue that based on that definition, obesity can be thought of as a disease. So in other words the definition of disease can be pretty loose. Also the definition of obesity is worth looking at: "a condition characterized by the excessive accumulation and storage of fat in the body" This definition is also pretty loose. In fact, I question its validity. So, I would say that those people who think obesity is a disease only include the scope of obesity that falls under "impairs normal functioning".While those people who think obesity is not a disease do not understand the definition of disease or consider "excessive" to just mean "more than is currently required" rather than "too much".

Why do people say being fat is a disease? james....?

There's a lot more to it than "eating lots and playing video games", but it's not a disease.
What does playing Warcraft have to do with it? Lol, what if a person plays 3 hours of it in a night, but exercises for an hour after?

A lot of things contribute to weight, and while a lot of it is choice, some of it isn't.
a) Genetics. Among many other things, this'll affect the distributing of weight on your body (when fat is collected around the midsection, or an "apple" figure, it's a lot more noticeable.)
b) Addiction. Some think of addiction as a disease, and yes, there is such a thing as food addiction. It's as real as alcohol or drug addiction, and is another means of coping.

Plus... you're adding "hairy", "slob", and "dandruff covered" to make this kid sound gross and accountable. But not all over weight people are such :) Your friend definitely sounds to blame for his own problems, though.

As for why he says that, perhaps he's ashamed and doesn't wanna admit he's to blame for his unhealthy lifestyle.
Unless he's got a food addiction, or some other problems, counselling seems unneccesary :)

edit: Those are all just possible reasons why "some" people say that, like you asked. ;) In his case, he's obviously just in denial and ashamed. Not a lot of people are responsible to own up to their decisions, unfortunately.

There are two things with regards to inbreeding. One is inborn genetic errors and the other is susceptibility to bacterial/viral (pathogen) attacks.I like to think of human genes as a deck of playing cards. There are desirable cards and there are undesirable cards. When a couple reproduce, the child receives a set of genes (cards) from mom and another from dad, shuffled together. PURELY for the sake of simplicity, think of it like getting one eye from mother and another from father and so on. We have two copies of each gene in our body. Some copies of genes are desirable and others may be disease causing, hence undesirable. With inbreeding, the chances of getting two bad copies is higher than breeding out of one’s own group. Hence, certain communities which have long history of inbreeding have a higher chance of blood borne disorders and other conditions.By the the way, the opposite is also true. If there are specific desirable features in these communities, such as height, eye colors, hair-type, mental abilities, physical abilities etc, those are also inherited more frequently in inbreeding communities.Another vulnerability of an inbred community is that an opportunistic viral strain (though rare) can cause widespread havoc on the community as they have a limited immune variety to deal with specific threats. The bottom line is- in inbred couples and communities, inheritance of good or bad is more frequent than out-bred couples. Since bad can be vastly more damaging to an individual, it’s recommended to avoid inbreeding.

Obesity is absolutely a disease that requires a range of interventions and medical management... People may say 'just eat less, have will power' but they just don't understand that simply does not work for many people.Successfully treating obesity shouldn't just be measured in lost pounds, but in not escalating to other diseases. Some of the most common diseases that are directly and indirectly linked to obesity are:Type II DiabetesHeart DiseaseHypertensionHypercholesterolemiaLiver and kidney disordersJoint Pain/Osteoarthritis/GoutRespiratory disordersGastro-esophageal reflux diseaseInfertilityCertain CancersDepression and anxiety disordersSleep ApneaObesity is a medical disease that is increasing significantly nowadays. It is classically defined as a body mass index of ≥30 kg/m2. Almost all healthcare professionals are exposed to obese patients because of their higher risk for morbidity and mortality, and surgeons are no exceptions. When combined with a comprehensive treatment plan, bariatric surgery may often act as an effective tool to provide you with long term weight-loss and help you increase your quality of health. Bariatric surgery has been shown to help improve or resolve many obesity-related conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and more. Frequently, individuals who improve their weight find themselves taking less and fewer medications to treat their obesity-related conditions.

Do believe Obesity is a disease? If so or not Explain Why.?

Hmmm . . . By Rebekkah's reasoning, then, a drug addict is just someone who doesn't have the willpower to stop using.

Whether obesity is a disease or not depends on how you define "disease". Some people insist it must be communicable and caused by an identifiable pathogen (this is germ theory). This means that things like arthritis, coronary heart disease, MS, etc are NOT diseases. This also eliminates most mental health conditions. Is schizophrenia a disease? Just a "health condition"? What?

The label doesn't really matter much, except to insurance companies who don't want to pay to treat your "disease" (by the way, many obese people benefit greatly from attentive medical intervention--is that enough to make it a disease?). The truth about obesity, however, is that many people have great difficulty controlling their weight for a variety of reasons--from food addiction to low metabolism to poor dietary awareness and so on. Before you say they are "not aware or caring about losing weight", why don't you try attending an Overeater's Anonymous meeting? It's easy to be smug about a problem you don't have--why not try for some compassion?

And no, I'm not obese.

Edit: Rebekkah, if you were able to overcome your obesity by simply mustering your willpower, then I congratulate you. You should know, though, that most obese people do not succeed where you have, and require intervention of some sort--just as addicts often do. Intervention in this case might be as simple as attending "Weight Watchers" regularly to medically-supervised weight loss or occasionally more drastic measures. Willpower, in and of itself, is usually not enough.

Obesity is not directly factored by genetics. There are several causes for obesity that are marked by genetics. Metabolism, growth, bone structure, ability to deal with stress, etc., are all genetic factors that can affect the ease of achieving obesity. The main cause for obesity is consuming more calories than are used by the body for a long period of time. Inactivity and increased sugar and carbohydrates intake are usually environmental factors that are taught to an individual that becomes obese. It is easier for some people to become obese due to poor genetics, but the overall factors are due to the environment. I would say that people choose to overeat or are taught poor eating habits, but there is also a special case. In third world countries were food is not plentiful, the rates of obesity are high due to carbohydrates being the only source of food, with protein being scarce. The inability to balance meals correctly can also lead to obesity.Genetics is only a small part of the story. Activity and diet play a much bigger role for most people.
