Why Do You Need Drugs Tests For Jobs In The Usa

How often do jobs drug test?

Most do random drug testing once a month. They cal a random sampling of their employees and normally let them know a few hours before the test.

Are U.S. presidents drug tested?

This is one of the funniest questions on the site. Some very strange things indeed would probably come to light, especially if the testing extended to members of Congress. At the height of the Watergate Scandal Senator Sam Ervine remarked, ‘There are a couple of lines in Shakespeare that apply to him [Nixon]: “Upon what meat doth this our Caesar feed / That he is grown so great?” My immediate reaction was to say ‘amphetamines’, whereupon a friend of mine said, ‘Surely, something stronger’.You’re gonna crack me up!

Do you have to take a drug test before applying for a Class A License in California?

NO. In the USA, You DO NOT get drug tested BEFORE you get your license. But US DOT standards REQUIRE that if you want to WORK as a commercial driver you WILL be drug tested before you are hired, and subject to random drug tests for as long as you are employed. It doesn't matter what you're hauling or where you drive.

ALSO, a Commercial driver has a lower standard for alcohol consumption. As long as you carry a CDL in your pocket, you are LEGALLY DRUNK at .04 BAC instead of .08, as would apply to non-CDL drivers. And that is at ANY time, and no matter what you are driving.

Bottom line... If you have ANY reason to be concerned about drug or alcohol testing, then you do not want to be a commercial driver.

Do You agree with pre-employment drug testing?

I do not. LET ME REPEAT....I DO NOT AGREE WITH THIS POLICY!! I feel this is an infringement on my civil rights. I do not think it is ANY employer's business what I do when I am not on their clock. I actually think we should have pre-employment stupidity testing, or pre-employment common sense testing instead.
People who smoke weed are NOT more likely to steal, lie, cheat, call out sick NEARLY as much as people who abuse alcohol. Please, folks, NO NASTY COMMENTS OR RUDENESS. I just want to see if I am alone on this. (incidentally, I told a friend in The Netherlands about this policy and she couldn't believe this was truly a common practice in the USA. She thought I was joking. And no, she is NOT a weed/drug user.)

Do medical students and doctors have to take drug tests?

NO, and that has always amazed me! Through med school and my entire medical career there was no standard requirement for drug testing. Nurses have random testing but not doctors. There have been many physicians who have become addicts. The drugs are easily available in pharmaceutical quality. I was astounded by the results of an anonymous questionnaire we were given in med school during the early 1970s asking about drug use. A full 80% of med students at the prestigious school I attended admitted to using illegal drugs at some time or another. There was honesty only because it was anonymous. Still, with those results in their possession, no drug testing was ever requested of us. This must be due to the strong medical lobby. I'm a retired physician now, but even while I was in practice I thought every doctor should have routine random drug screens. Maybe they do now at some institutions since I have been out for a few years, but the medical student above says they still are not being tested. Perhaps the public at large should protest this since many other people in less sensitive jobs have to be tested. Doctors are NOT immune to addiction. Indeed with the stresses of medical practice
physicians may be more susceptible. (I am speaking about the USA.)

Is it common for software development jobs to do drug test in the hiring process?

I have been a developer for 23 years and hiring them for 18 years. This is going to vary between industries you work in, whether it is government work, and the size of the company. Large companies working in kingly standing industries will typically drug test you. I have has several jobs over the years and I believe I have been drug tested each time.

Do police officers get drug tested? If so, how often?

It will depend on department policy and union MOUs, but I’d guess my experience is similar to what happens in most departments.I was drug tested as part of the hiring process, and we were drug tested any time we were injured on duty or involved in a traffic accident or shooting. If allegations were made regarding drug or alcohol use, we could also be tested.Frankly, it would be difficult for a cop to hide this type of addiction for any length of time unless they were in a very small department. Most departments have several DREs (Drug Recognition Experts) on staff, as well as cops who have been interacting with people who are under the influence for years and can recognize the symptoms without the intense training a DRE goes through.Still, it happens now and again and we hear about it on the news. It’s hard to play in the mud of criminality for years and stay squeaky clean, but most manage to do it. The few who don’t sully all cops.

Do companies drug test in Vietnam?

I recently moved to Vietnam and am looking for a job as an engineer. I need to know if companies generally perform drug tests for this line of work. ...sometimes, often, never? In the USA it's extremely common, and many of the jobs I will be looking for will be with companies based in western countries, most likely USA, but I don't know if they test over here.

Thanks!
