Why Does My Ankles Swell Up When I Am Standing

Why are my feet/ankles swelling after a massage?

Long story short, had a massage 2 days ago (my first professional one ever, in 28 years!) Was through a special at a wellness center, where the doc did several other minor treatments during the pre-exam/intro thing. Used some laser thing for few seconds on my leg. I have scoliosis, which has gone untreated for many, many years now. So needless to say, he said I had quite a few "issues."

Anyways, to the massage part. Had a 1 hour long basic (I think) full body massage and boy... it felt great, as I'm in pain quite a bit but have learned and forced to just "deal with it" ..so this was a real treat. The next day, felt the usual slight soreness with a slight bit of swelling starting, noticeable but not alarming. Having scoliosis and other possible problems, dont have the best circulation, so a little swelling in the feet and especially ankle, lower calf.. isn't that uncommon.

However the next day I awoke and almost fell over upon standing due to my feet and ankles being so swollen. Don't think I've ever seen them this puffy that I can recall. Also,, it seems to be my left foot more so than my right. Which I'm pretty sure is also the side he used the laser thing on, not sure what it was supposed to do.. seemed harmless. I was told that massages, especially when not given often..can cause a rapid release of toxins, bad ****, etc. and to drink plenty of water. Which isn't problem because I already drink good amount of water daily. I've also been having to urinate quite frequently, not crazy, but bit more than normal. The swelling isn't really painful, just really awkward and kind of alarming. Could it be possible heart issue? Only thing I've found so far when i google it is something called.... "Lymphoedema" http://alphaphysio.com.au/index.php?act=viewDoc&docId=26 <------The link about it.

So much for long story short, haha. Just wanted to get all the info out there, so I can hopefully get the best answer. Thanks in advance, if you read all this!! I'm worried it could be a sign/symptom of a larger, more serious issue.

Why do my feet and ankles swell when I am walking?

Ok during the day when I am walking or standing I will take my shoes off and my ankles and feet swell. Then I lay down and they go back to normal. When I wake up in the morning my feet are completely fine and healthy looking. I don't understand this. Can someone please let me know what is going on? I have gained weight so maybe that is the cause?

Why does my left ankle swell after sitting at my computer chair?

Your left ankle actually should not swell at all, sitting or standing. Sitting may be making some underlying condition, like deep vein thrombosis, worse. However, it is this possible underlying condition that needs to be unearthed. It is for that reason that I think you should see a doctor.

Why is my ankle swelling after a knee injury?

Could be a few things. Could be that you may have irritated something in the ankle after your knee injury. It could also be that the swelling my have moved down from the knee to the ankle due to gravity (especially if you have to do lots of standing).Best thing to do if it is an acute injury is to ice the knee and elevate the leg. I would suspect that elevating the leg will cause the swelling to decrease. If swelling persists, you can try a compression sock.

Why is my foot/ankle swollen?????

Foot, leg, and ankle swelling is common with the following situations:
Prolonged standing
Long airplane flights or automobile rides
Menstrual periods (for some women)
Pregnancy -- excessive swelling may be a sign of pre-eclampsia, a serious condition sometimes called toxemia, that includes high blood pressure and swelling
Being overweight
Increased age
Injury or trauma to your ankle or foot
Other conditions that can cause swelling to one or both legs include:
Blood clot
Leg infection
Venous insufficiency (when the veins in your legs are unable to adequately pump blood back to the heart)
Varicose veins
Burns (including sunburn)
Insect bite or sting
Starvation or malnutrition
Surgery to your leg or foot
Certain medications may also cause your legs to swell:
Hormones like estrogen (in birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy) and testosterone
A group of blood pressure lowering drugs called calcium channel blockers (such as nifedipine, amlodipine, diltiazem, felodipine, and verapamil)
Steroids
Antidepressants, including MAO inhibitors (such as phenelzine and tranylcypromine) and tricyclics (such as nortriptyline, desipramine, and amitriptyline)

After standing and marching for a long time my ankle starts to feel like I've sprained it?

I have band from 9am-5pm, and most of that time is spent outside of the field. I have bad ankles to begin with, but my right ankle has a tendency to swell up to 2x normal size and it feels like I've sprained it. Today it got so bad that a fellow band member had to pretty much carry me back to the band room. It ONLY affects my right ankle, and the pain goes away a few hours after I get home, but the swelling stays for a while. I'm also having a lot of joint pain in my knees from standing upright for so long, but I don't know if that's related.

Any suggestions? I'd like to know what exactly it is, but mostly I just need to know how to keep it from hurting because ***I DON'T HAVE THE OPTION OF GETTING OFF OF IT***.

Thanks!

Painful swollen feet and ankles....Help!!?

I recently started a new job where I'm standing and walking a LOT, which is a huge change from my last job of 3 years, where I sat all the time. Over the last week and a half, I've noticed increased swelling and pain in my feet. And it's not just a little pain, it's a lot. My feet were so swollen this morning that it was difficult to fit into my shoes. Does anyone have any suggestions??

How can I reduce chronic swelling in my ankles?

How can I reduce chronic swelling in my ankles? When I wake up they usually look normal. But they swell throughout the day and by nighttime look noticeably plumper. It's obviously extremely unflattering.Wearing ill-fitting shoes, being on my feet a lot, & dehydration tend to make it worse. What else could be causing it/what can I do to combat it?Ankle swelling is a non-specific symptom associated with many conditions, some of which are serious, such as heart disease or kidney disease.  If you have not been diagnosed with an illness, a likely explanation is reduced circulation in your veins and lympatic vessels caused by standing, sitting and/or poor hydration.Tissue fluids collect in lymphatic vessels and are returned to the blood via the veins.  The muscles in your legs act like a pump when they contract to assist blood to flow through the veins towards your heart.  When you are in a static position (standing or seated) for a long time, the absence of that pump action causes the blood return to slow.  Like having a partial blockage in a pipe, fluids start to back-up, initially affecting the veins and subsequently affecting the lymphatics. The first thing to do to combat swelling is to avoid prolonged sitting/standing, and to do some leg/ankle exercises if you must be in those positions for extended periods.  From: LYMPHOEDEMA SUPPORT NETWORKOther things to consider:Wear support/compression stockings.  About CompressionReduce your salt intake.Increase your hydration level.  Sip water from a portable stainless steel container throughout the day to maintain hydration without frequent bathroom trips. If these measures don't reduce the amount of swelling you experience, you should consult your doctor for a more detailed assessment of your condition.

Why do I feel my legs being swollen after sitting down for more than an hour?

Few of my friends who had the same problem, after some medical tests, where advised to practice yoga, asanas, meditation and also reduce weight, take up exercise and healthy diet and go for 2–3 minutes walk after each hour. Now it is fine. Yes but medical opinion is important just to check if there are other physical causes or not.
