Why Does My Antique Radio Only Buzz When I Turn It On

Audio Equipment: Is the loud popping sound when you plug/unplug your speakers bad for them?

Most speaker cones are driven from a power amplifier.. The pop - like you said -  is a transient spike. But the important thing here is that it gets amplified up through the pre-amp and into the power amp.. Speakers usually move in the ol' in-out fashion with respect the the voltage at the input.. and a big spike could loosen the cone from its suspension mechanism.. The higher the power and the more delicate the cone - the more the danger to the speakers ( what is normal for a woofer cone, could end blowing up a tweeter cone) . For e.g. In live events, where high output PA speakers are used, this is a very serious issue - because such a spike could throw the speaker cone out of its place, and it wouldn't work from that point on. For this reason, some high end audio equipment have a limiter at the output, that prevents signal from exceeding a certain predefined limit. So any occuring transients would never hit the cone at a level that is unhealthy to them. Most home audio equipment tends to operate at lower levels. That being said, there is still some damage inflicted on the speakers - just maybe not of the same magnitude.. especially the smaller ones.If your system has a remote control, it might be wise to hit a mute button just before you change to another input... or maybe find a way to turn off just the speakers (if separately powered) before you interchange the connection.Hope this wasn't too star warsy :)

Why is your cat terrified?

Poppi when we first got her in 2012 was absolutely terrified of bad weather, the bathroom, women screaming and bass male voices. A bit of background she was adopted from RSPCA and she had come from a abuse case. We brought her home and were watching a program and there was a scene with a woman screaming. Poppi was sitting with me and she looked at me with sheer terror in her eyes, just shaking. My husband very quickly switched to a Antiques roadshow episode and we spoke very softly to her and calmed her down. She wanted to be held and cuddled. She would wail when went into the bathroom but if we let her in she shook in terror by the door especially when we flushed the toilet. Bad weather would send her to velcro against me. After about 3 weeks she realised we were very calm people and she started to relax around us. It helped that Thalia was so easy going around us.How we found out about the bass voice fear. we had to have some tradies out to work on the roof and one of them had a very deep voice. (Note we had other tradies out before and she just kept an eye on them.) Once he spoke she vanished! I found her curled in a little ball (3.5 kg cat) just shaking with terror behind the computer room door! I couldn’t get her to come out until after they left and then I couldn’t even move without her trying to climb inside me.Poppi still doesn’t like bad weather but she just burrows into her comfy spot. She isn’t terrified of the bathroom anymore (thinks we’re nuts to take showers). She knows the difference between a program on TV and real life. But a real bass voice will still send her into terrified hiding. Because we were never told any details we thought the abuse was just neglect/abandonment as she does have food anxiety issues ( upset if she can see the bottom of the food bowl). From the way she acts she was witness to, or even the victim of physical abuse by a bass voiced man.

How can I check a capacitor with a multimeter?

Many meters have a built in capacitance function. look for a capacitor symbol like the one on the meter below in the function selector in the startight up (12-o'clock position). In this one it's next to the Ohm symbol and in blue which means you need to press the blue button (upper left) and the capacitor symbol will appear on the screen.Another way a general multimeter can check capacitors if there is no capacitance function is with the ohm-meter function.  Its not accuarate but will tell you is the capacitor is open, short or capacitive. With the meter in the ohms function, there will be some constant current sent out from positive to negative leads. An open cap will show open, a shorted one will show zero ohms. A good capacitor will charge up and ramp from zero ohms to infinity (OL) - the rate at which it will do so it dependent on the capcitance. Since the range of capacitors you might commonly encounter is 10 pf to 1000 uF that's 14 orders of magnitude so with small values you won't see the ramp and large values the ramp will be very long...Values around .1 to 1 uF you can readily see, others you will have to observe carefully and then discharge the cap to check again.  The voltage on the cap won't exceed 9V.

You wake up as Donald Trump for one day. What do you do the entire day?

I don’t have a lot of time. I assume that I am going to turn back into the Orange Pumpkin at midnight. I mean, Trump will resume his identity and I will wake up the next day as myself. So I have to do irreversible actions as much as possible. Well, I’ll do some things he can reverse if he dares.Alert the media that I will have a presser in the afternoon to announce what I am doing, and make apologies.Tell the White House chef that I will be eating vegetarian today, and will need a large and steady supply of the best coffee.Put out a few tweets praising Hillary Clinton and Liberals, and denouncing Putin, Wikileaks, and the Deplorables, and apologizing for lying about everything and everybody.Get Mueller on the line, and tell him to get his people to the Oval Office to interview me so I can spill the beans at length, and order various other officials do to the same.Ask them if there is anything they can charge me with today that I can plead guilty to in court.Have them bring a letter I can sign authorizing his team to get any relevant government documents they want, and any of Trump’s personal financials and those of any of his businesses, and e-mails and whatever. Similarly for the investigating committees in Congress, and various state Attorneys-General. Have them get Trump’s tax returns today in electronic form. And let the media publish them on the Web.Undo the Muslim ban and any other Executive Orders of consequence.Fire the cabinet, effective at midnight, after their interviews with Mueller’s team.Nominate all of Obama’s cabinet to their former posts.Renominate all of the fired US Attorneys, especially Preet Bharara.Withdraw all judicial nominations.Go back to the Mueller interviews.Announce to the press in the afternoon that I have confessed to everything, and answer questions from the real news organizations only. Blast the actual fake news. Apologize to various individuals, and to everybody in the world.Go back for more Mueller interviews for the rest of the afternoon and evening.Resign as President.Watch some of the MSNBC coverage on my DVR when I get back. You’re welcome.
