Why Does My Ear Sort Of Hum/pulse With Loud Noises

Why does my ear sometimes sound like a cat is purring INSIDE it?

This started about a week and a half ago, and happens anywhere from once a day to three to four times a day - but suddenly, my left ear will sound like there is a cat purring INSIDE my ear, and it's really kind of annoying. It only happens for a minute or two at a time, but I can't hear out of that ear when it happens. It was so loud when it first did it, I thought maybe my husband would be able to hear it, but he just looked at me like I was crazy....

Why is it doing this, and should I be concerned?

Why do I sometimes hear my pulse in my left ear when my neck is in left lateral flexion & right rotation?

...arterial circulation in the neck (carotid) is very brisk, and what may possibly be happening is a portion of your left carotid may momentarily also bend with your neck flexion and rotation, causing a temporary increase in flow resistance and/or "turbulence" in arterial flow. At the same time this neck flexion/rotation may render your carotid closer in proximity to bony jaw structures, good conductors of sound. This "turbulence" may be referred to your mandible and other bony facial structures, and radiated to your left eardrum which interprets it as "your heartbeat" or "pulsebeat".....Variation in intensity is probably linked to blood pressure fluctuation or a slight alteration in cardiac output which does, by the way, vary with respiratory effort, both of which would alter the amount of "turbulence" produced as blood is pumped through the carotid....In any event, it sounds as if this phenomena is totally "positional" in nature for you, and vascular disease in the 27y/o female (assuming you still have ovaries/menustration) is indeed very rare....so...yes I think you're hearing your "heartbeat" or rather blood flow turbulence in the carotid artery, and I suspect the fact that what you hear is somehow associated with your neck flexion/rotation, it's potentiation of a small alteration or resistance in brisk carotid blood flow, and the positional sound conduction of which it seemingly "amplifies"...........joz......

What is that sound we hear when we close our ears?

Is it a lower pitch rumbling sound?  Or maybe it's a higher pitched ringing type sound? You really should add detail on what you mean by "close your ears." I may edit or amend at that time, but for now will take the top two possibilities. The low rumble is "jitter" noise caused by the movement of the Tensor tympani muscle.  Some people have control of these and can trigger the rumbling sound on demand.  The normal function of the muscle is to dampen sounds created by chewing.  and can control them.  It is possible to hear a very similar sound by holding a tightly clenched muscle, such as your fist, to your ear.You may also be able to trigger this low rumbling sound with an attempt to close your eyes very tight while also attempting to smile.  As for the ringing, this is minor league Tinnitus.   Tinnitus is a condition where the hairs in the Cochlea become worn or damaged by exposure to harmful, loud sounds.  A gun shot or explosion at close range can trigger this as can a concert or frequent exposure to loud sounds of other kinds such as machinery. Many people develop a small amount of ear noise as they age and are exposed to various sounds.  Ambient noise typically masks this leaving them unaware.  Closing the ears with a plug or your finger can make this type of ear noise audible.  It is anyway, but our ability to discriminate sounds is limited in some ways that mask sounds like this when other, louder sounds are present.  A variant on this is a quiet sound at specific frequencies relative to louder ones often goes unheard.Related:This Psychoacoustic property inherent in our auditory processing capabilities has been exploited to create compressed mp3 type music files where those inaudible sounds are removed to reduce the overall amount of data required to convey music.  Of course people vary in this with some preferring uncompressed audio or compressed audio delivered at fairly high data rates.Another use of this is the Arbitron radio ratings company encodes watermark information into audio broadcasts for use by their Portable People Meter (PPM) rating measurement device.

What is that noise that you hear in your head when it is quiet?

If it's quiet and not distracting, it's just normal background noise of the electrical pulses of your brain. If it gets too loud it's called tinnitus and could be a symptom of impending deafness or other physical problems such as high blood pressure? Some would even say its the noise of our internal antenna trying to pick up messages in the ether of space; the knowledge of the ages floating around waiting to be snagged by our internal antenna.

Hearing problems in elderly and loud roaring noises?

My neighbor is 91. Her hearing has always been great until a few months ago. She has been treated with antibiotics and another medication for awhile. All of a sudden, she is hearing what she thinks is her furnace making a loud humming noise and its keeping her up all night. We've checked her furnace, clock, smoke alarms, and phone and found nothing. Could she be hearing this in her head? She mostly hears it between late afternoon and early morning..

I can't hear out of my ear how do I sort it?

You might have an ear infection. It sounds to me like you have some mucous clogging your ear. You should see a doctor and get some medication. Don't neglect your ears they are very sensitive!!

Power meter makes a loud pulsating hum in cold weather?

Sounds like some disturbance on the line is beating with the line frequency. Do any of your neighbors use a high power inductive load such as a multi-horsepower induction motor, perhaps running a large heat pump? Is anyone generating electricity and feeding it to the grid? What's the approximate amplitude pulsing rate? What happens when you completely shut off all your loads? I once went for months hearing a hum even when (I thought) I had all the loads turned off. Turned out I shut off all the loads but one, the water pump 300 feet underground, which was running continuously due to a bad pressure switch.
Good luck, and don't read too much Edgar Allen Poe.
