Why Is My Homemade Vanilla Extract Not As Dark As Store Bought

How is vanilla extract made?

Vanilla extract is a common ingredient in baked goods, but you can use it to flavor other foods as well, such as oatmeal and other hot cereals, yogurt, smoothies, and frozen desserts. It’s easy to make your own vanilla extract at home and you’ll save money doing so.Homemade vanilla extract makes a lovely gift, too. Just put it in a decorative bottle and tie a ribbon around it.All you need to make vanilla extract is two or three vanilla beans, ¾ cup of vodka, and a small glass bottle or jar. If you use three beans, your extract may be ready a bit sooner. It may also have a slightly stronger flavor. Look for vanilla beans in the baking section of your favorite grocery store, near the spices.Carefully cut lengthwise slits in the vanilla beans with a sharp knife, opening them enough to expose the seeds but not cutting them all the way through. Put the beans in the bottle or jar and pour the vodka over the beans. Add additional vodka if needed to submerge the beans completely.Put the lid on the bottle and store it in a cool, dark place like a pantry or cupboard. Don’t refrigerate it. Leave it alone for one to three months, until the liquid turns golden and it smells strongly of vanilla.Remove the vanilla beans after your vanilla extract is done. You don’t need to discard the beans after you make vanilla extract, though. There are still more uses for those beans!Rinse them off and let them dry thoroughly. Then grind them up in a coffee grinder or food processor and add the grounds to a couple cups …https://trendpickle.com/how-to-m...

Is it hard to find pure vanilla extract in South Korea?

It is very difficult to find Vanilla Extract anywhere in South Korea;

If your friend needs to obtain some Vanilla Extract, I would suggest that your friend make an acquaintance with some U.S. Military personnel, or dependents of U.S. Military personnel.

Explain that you are needing some Vanilla Extract for baking, and would they purchase some for you in the U.S. Military Commissary close to where your friend lives. Currently, this would be the only place you may obtain some.

Your friend would not even be able to find Vanilla Extract in any black market store where they are, unless your friend places a special order with a black market store Ajima, so that the Ajima may ask some of her contacts to purchase some, then resell it to your friend.

As is norm, South Korean people are not yet into "American style" home baking, thus the demand for Vanilla Extract is currently non-existent.

What can you do if you add too much vanilla extract to a recipe?

If I added too much vanilla by mistake, I would balance it with a contrasting flavor. A pinch more salt (not enough to make the recipe salty, some citrus zest (vanilla and citrus are excellent companion flavors), maybe something dark and slightly bitter like buckwheat honey or molasses. It would depend on the recipe.

Is vanilla the same as vanilla extract?

The vanilla "bean" as it is called is the dried seedpod of Vanilla orchids.  The seed pods themselves have the distinctive odor of the vanilla and the vanilla bean as is can be used to flavor foods.  In some higher quality vanilla ice creams you can see little brown specs - these are actual pieces of the vanilla seed.  The whole pod can be put into a container of sugar or thrown into milk or other liquids.  The result can be used for ice cream or cake or other products.  This is one way to get vanilla flavor.  But vanilla beans are fairly expensive - 1/4 lb of beans on Amazon appears to sell for $20 - 25, so this would equate to $100/lb.  And they do not store will, since the flavor components are volatile, nor are they particularly easy to handle. To maintain the volatile compounds the open pods and seeds can be soaked in alcohol.  This would be vanilla extract. From a chemical standpoint, I image that the chemical compounds in the whole beans and seedpod exist at different ratios than those found in the extract.  At the same time, going through the extraction process effectively concentrate the flavor compounds. So - Is "vanilla" the same as vanilla extract? It depends on what you mean by "vanilla" but if you are asking if the various products used that originate from the vanilla bean are the same, no, they are not identical but come from the same source and give similar flavor profiles in the end.If you are asking if artificial vanilla flavor - sometimes labeled vanillin - are the same, no they are not.  Vanillin is a specific chemical component and the main flavor compound in vanilla extract.  It can be chemically synthesized.

Where can I buy vanilla extract?

Yes. It's in the baking aisle with the spices.

Vanilla extract question?

Ok, I just did something kind of stupid. I wanted to see if I could make my own cherry vanilla Dr. Pepper using cherry Dr. Pepper. I added some store brand artificial vanilla to my cup of soda and drank it. But now I seem to have an after taste of alcohol in the back of my mouth. Now that I think about it, I've never seen anyone use vanilla for anything other than baking or other types of heated cooking that would evaporate alcohol. So now I'm wondering, does it contain alcohol? And also, is it even safe to drink vanilla before it's been heated?

And remember, it is artificial vanilla, not real vanilla extract. I really hope it doesn't cause I haven't drank in two years, and I'm sure my tolerance level is very low, so even a small amount at this point will turn me into a staggering moron in less than an hour.

Can you make brownies without vanilla extract?

sure, it's just the smell is not so great. But if you don't have it. try this:Substitute 1 teaspoon (5 mL) pure vanilla extract with:

3-inch (7.5 cm) piece vanilla bean (split or beans scraped from pod; add early in the recipe to allow the most flavor extraction)
1 to 1-1/2 teaspoons (5 to 7 mL) Homemade Vanilla Extract: Combine 3/4 cup (175 mL) vodka and 1 to 2 split vanilla beans in a large glass jar. Seal and store in a cool, dark place for at least 4 months or indefinitely. To use sooner, jump-start the mixture with 3 tablespoons (45 mL) pure vanilla extract and store for at least 2 months. Remove extract as necessary, replacing the vanilla beans when they give up their flavor and the vodka begins to run low.
1/2 teaspoon (2 mL) double-strength vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon (1 mL) triple-strength vanilla extract.

Substitute for Mexican vanilla extract?

I have a sopapilla recipe that calls for Mexican vanilla extract, but I only have regular vanilla extract and the smallest bottle of Mexican vanilla extract at the local Mexican grocery store is not cheap, especially considering I probably won't be using it again. Is there anything I can do to make up for the loss of flavor if I were to use the regular vanilla extract? The recipe calls for 1 tsp. of the extract.

Is my vanilla extract suppose to smell like alcohol?

I just found my really really really old vanilla extract that has been in my cabinet for about 5 years. The first time i bought it was because i wanted to make cookies in 6th grade and that is probably the only time it has been used. i know people say that if it still smells like vanilla it should be fine; however, my vanilla extract smells more pungently of alcohol with a HINT of vanilla. It is the Safeway brand so i don't know if i should still use it. thank you!

What happens when you drink vanilla extract?

Vanilla extract is about 70 proof, a bit less than vodka or rum, and a good deal more expensive.Lemon extract is usually considerably more alcoholic, on the order of 170 proof. (The oils in lemon extract don't dissolve in water, and the solution would separate.)In both cases, it's very unpleasant to drink straight, and too expensive to get drunk on unless you're absolutely desperate. Some teenagers, and alcoholics, will do that when they can't get their hands on anything else, and it's a very bad idea in both cases. It's unlikely to cause actual harm in and of itself, but anybody that desperate to be drunk is going to cause themselves harm in some other way (including overconsumption), and is in need of help.
