Why Is My Jaw Popping

Why Does My Jaw Keep Popping?

Hi guys! For some reason, my jaw is always popping when I get up (and sometimes during the afternoon). I have an over-bite and I haven't gotton braces yet because my family can't afford them now. Anyways, normally my jaw only pops once or twice in the morning and then it stops, but lately my jaw has been popping more often, and it doesn't go away for a long time! Does anyone here know WHY it is popping? If you do, why is it getting worse? Thanks!

Jaw popping with braces?

my jaw is popping like crazy right now, and this has only been the second time this has happened. i've had my braces for about a year now, and i wear rubber bands.
A month ago, (when I wasn't wearing my rubber bands) my jaw randomly started popping, it went away by the next day though and didn't happen again so I didn't bring it up to my dentist. Today, (I have been wearing my rubber bands), my jaw started popping again, and 2 days ago I got my braces tightened. Is this normal? Should I stop wearing my rubber bands?

My Jaw- Popping?

When it come the temporal mandibular joint current treatment is symptomatic and not curative. that means we manage the pain and really can't treat the cause.

The jaw joint is the most complicated joint in our body. It's a sliding arthroidal(sp) and synovial joint, so it's like the knee with 6 muscle playing a role in movement and in keeping a little pad of tissue in between the two bones.

And it's small to boot. if one of the muscle holding the little pillow or cushion, between the bones goes haywire, the bone pops off the cushion and you hear a click under your ear.

Treatment options are limited. First of all you need to know where you are in the spectrum of TMJ. Most people have some kind of TMJ problem at some point in their life. this usually last a few days or weeks and then disappears unnoticed after a few days. For a very unlucky few, it progresses to a permanent deviation of the jaw on opening or closing and becomes permanent. A small percentage of this group can becomes crippled by the crunch of bone on bone as then try to eat something. So there is a wide spectrum

If you are just noticing a problem, just ignore the symptoms and don't chew gum or sing or do anything that requires repetitive extreme movement of the jaw. Use hot an cold compresses alternating every 5 minutes. Dont' make any fast or exteme movements, particularly after the cold compresses. Compresses should be right under and in front of the ear.

The odds are in your favor, chances are it will go away someday and you wont even notice its gone until its gone for a few weeks.
good luck

Why is my jaw popping all of a sudden?

It may be the start of TMJ(Temporomandibular Joint) the two joints that connect the jaw to the skull. if It gets worse and If you get headaches if your jaw locks, if you have pain on one side of your mouth, you should go to a TMJ specialist There is a mouth appliance, muscle retraining, steriod injections etc. that can help.
I have had it for years and it comes and goes. When it comes, it is quite painful and hard to chew food like a bagel. It started with my jaw clicking and proceeded to get worse.
Don't let it get out of control.
Good Luck!

Why does my ear hurt after popping my jaw a lot?

Well first I've gotta ask why your jaw pops in the first place. Typically, your jaw does not “pop” unless you grind your teeth or put a lot of undue strain on your jaw. When you do this, your jaw is actually out of place from where it should be. This could be putting pressure on your ear that it isn't used to (since your jaw goes all that way back to your ear). Try placing your index finger right in front of your ear, just behind your sideburn area, then move your jaw around. The small piece that you feel moving around is in fact part of your jaw and is quite sensitive, as is your ear. If I were you, I would consult your dentist about this next time you go in for a checkup. They can fit you with grind-guards to wear at night that will prevent you from grinding your teeth or doing other things that may be putting strain on your jaw.

Jaw popping because of retainer?

You have developed a TMJ disorder and NO, it's not your retainer that's causing your TMJ problems but likely the type of orthodontic treatment you received. Traditional orthodontic treatment where premolars were extracted to make room and the front teeth moved back (retracted) to close excess spaces have been shown to cause TMJ problems, especially in females. The cause of the clicking or popping is a part of the jaw joint called the articular disk being forced out of place when the teeth come together and popping back into place when the mouth opens. So in the morning when you open your mouth and hear the pop, that is the sound of your jaw going back into joint (actually it's the articular disk going back into place). Unfortunately, the fix is to undo all that had been done to you and that involves reopening all the extraction sites and repositioning the lower jaw forward with a functional appliance. An orthodontist who knows functional orthodontics will know how to do this and not a traditional orthodontist (like yours). Check this site to find a functional orthodontist who can help: www.iaortho.org.

I keep popping my jaw when I sleep!!! How do I keep from doing this????

Sounds like you have temporomandibular joint problems. TMJ. I'm surprised your dentist hasn't considered this. Here is a link.

My jaw is popping and locking after braces?

I had my braces taken off over a month ago and yes I did wear rubber bands to improve my jaw alignment. I just got up and found the join in front of my left ear hurts! It feels a little swollen as well. I have been having a lot of clicking in the right side ever since my jaw moved from the rubber bands but no clicking in the left side. I have a family history of TMJ. I was reading somewhere that if you hurt your cartilage (or pierced it) it could have messed it up? Well I did get my RIGHT cartilage pierced maybe Wednesday?
