Why Is My Laptop So Slow

Why is my laptop so slow?

Hard drive space is not the main thing that decreases computer operating speeds. Alot of people think it does. If you have 1gb left on your computer, when comparing performance to one with say 50gb, there isn't much difference.

Some causes of performance drop:

1. Corrupted/ageing hard drive

Your hard drive might be old and starting to break down, decreasing speed, losing memory, etc.

2. Hardware problems (broken or ageing etc.)

Your computer components might be ageing and breaking, making your computer run more slowly. Also related to your hard drive, your connectors might be broken, so data transfer is slow.

3. Viruses etc.

This can affect your computer greatly. You might have viruses that are slowing your computer down. Try running some scans or using free trusted anti virus programs.

4. Power supply

If you use a laptop, if you don't have the power supply/charger connected, your laptop will actually run much slower.

If you use a desktop, your power supply might not be supplying enough energy.

5. Background programs/applications

You may have alot of other programs/applications running while you are doing other things. Try shutting them down and closing them.

The best way to try to correct this is to reinstall your OS fresh. Just backup all your things on a external storage medium, USB flash drives, external Hard Drives, etc. and then wipe everything and do a complete re-install by inserting your operating disc. Then just put all your stuff back in.

Why is my laptop so slow?

you need know what is causing your computer to be slow
Your computer's Windows registry stores information about the its configuration like a database. Installing and uninstalling software will make your registry a mess, keeping your computer running slow and causing computer crashes.

The registry size keeps growing when you use Windows. When the registry becomes very large, your computer's performance will be slow and unstable. Some computer users even spend a lot of time trying to edit the registry manually. This can be a risky and laborious task.

After long-term use of a computer, the downloading of a large number of music, videos and movies from the Internet may result in your computer running slow. Its just like when your room becomes a mess without cleaning; our computer will be filled with a mass of junk files or duplicate files after a long operation too. These useless files use up some of the storage space of your hard drive as the "junk" accumulates.

When you surf the internet, some malicious plug-ins may automatically be installed in the computer through security loopholes in the system. These malicious plug-ins may change your system registry entries causing many different kinds of errors or problems in your PC.

The incorrect and incomplete un-installation or deletion of some files or applications may feed your system registry with invalid registry information. You might have unsuccessfully uninstalled certain applications or not used the "Add or Remove Programs" on "Control Panel", or maybe certain objects or files have been moved inappropriately. These unknown or misplaced files can have a lot to do with "why is my computer running slow". And it maybe that you see the start up process of your computer is much slower than before also.

How to increase computer speed? Your best, safest and fastest method of seeing what is causing your computer to be slow is to check out this slow computer fixer! http://registry-computer-cleaner.com Try a FREE scan and see the problems hiding in your slow computer.

One of the BEST ways to keep a PC running ‘fast’ is to maintain it. PC Maintenance can be relegated by some to a weekly or monthly activity, but if you are serious about "...working super fast..." then my best advise is to also have a PC that is:Regularly de-fragmented (Check to see the automated schedule is working)Periodically cleaned of any temp files that might be corrupt or outdatedPatched with latest Windows updates from Microsoft.Updated with a tool like Ninite (Install or Update Multiple Apps at Once ) and/or PSI (Personal Software Inspector Redirecting...)Regularly scanned with updated Antivirus and Spyware security software and if you use more than one, a choices that includes settings to insure they do not conflict.Regularly scanned with a registry cleaner like CCLeaner (CCleaner - Free Download - Piriform)Powered completely off for at least 30+ seconds one a week or more. For our clients we call all of that a ‘Maintenance Regiment’ that’s vital for keeping their most important thinking tool ready to productive and hopefully ‘fast’ too!

To speed up your computer and free up space and memory for free:

Go to the Start Menu> Run
Type in "appwiz.cpl"
Uninstall whatever you don't need.

Next, go to Start> Run and type in "msconfig".
Go to the Startup Tab and uncheck everything you don't want to startup. If you want, you can uncheck everything, and your anti-virus will still restart itself when you log on.

Now go to My Computer> Hard Drive> Documents and Settings> [USER NAME]> Local Settings> and delete everything inside the Temp Folder. (This is a hidden folder so you will need to have "show hidden files and folders" checked in Folder Options) All the files in this folder are just temporary files that your Internet stored for certain websites.

Then go to My Computer> Hard Drive> Windows> Prefetch and delete everything inside it. This folder is like an cache for programs and should be emptied about once a month.

Next, you should install CCleaner, it will get rid of alot of temporary files on your computer. It also has a registry repair system, which is easily the best free one available on the Internet:

Another option is to try defragmenting your computer.
Go to the Start Menu and go to All Programs
Go to Accessories and System Tools.
Choose Disk Defragmenter and when it loads click defragment.

Next, go to Device Manger (Start> RightClick My Computer> Properties> Hardware Tab> Device Manager) and update all drivers.

Another thing I would say is to compress your files if you already haven't.
Open My Computer and right click on your hard drive
Check the Compress Drive button and let it do it's thing.

Finally, make sure your Hard Drive doesn't have any bad sectors. Go to My Computer> Right Click Hard Drive> Properties> Tools Tab> Check Now> Check both boxes and Start. It will ask you to reboot, so reboot. This will clear out any bad sectors on your Hard Drive.

These are short-term solutions however. the easiest way is to just upgrade the RAM on your system, but at least the ways above are free.

Good Luck =]

Why is my Laptop slow?

It is very slow at start up and takes like five minutes before I can use it. It freezes at least once everyday and my laptop "beeps" loudly afterward (so people say the beeping occurs due to the system overheating, but my laptop is very well ventilated). Sometimes when I delete minuscule files like 10 KB, a small window with a loading bar appears that tells how long it will take for that file to be deleted (similar to the one appearing when downloading a file from the internet). This is peculiar because I just erased a 5 MB file a few minutes ago in the Recycle Bin and it deleted it instantly; there was no bar.

Here are the details:

Windows Vista Home Premium
Toshiba Satellite (model A215)
Processor: AMD Turion (tm) 64 x2 Mobile Technology TL-56 1.80 GHz
RAM is 1.00 GB
System type: 32-bit
Was on sale for about $700, bought on Fall 2007.

I deleted plenty of unused files and uninstalled several programs (made 7 icons on my desktop disappear). My laptop defragments weekly. Now my hard drive has 130 GB free space out of 184 GB with 54 GB occupied (approximately 29.35%). I even checked the System configuration (typed msconfig in the Run bar on the Start menu) to get rid of unnecessary programs running during start up and deactivate several services from unused programs. After restarting, I checked the Task Manager and there are around 86 processes running (it is usually around 85 to 98). I don't have any viruses nor is there any spyware.

Why is my laptop so slow if the hard drive is not even half full (just barely a quarter full). Is it the RAM or processor? Or the brand? Is there an appropriate "Hard-drive space:RAM" ratio that I am not aware of?

Hypothetically, if I were to buy another laptop, how can I tell if it will be fast?

Are Mac Books better? I never used a Mac, but I might have to learn to use one eventually (I'm a sophomore in college majoring in mechanical engineering and possibly double major with aerospace engineering).

Serious answers only, please!!!!

Why is my Laptop so slow?

If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don't always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.

First, if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.

2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:

1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser
2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".
3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.
4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.
5. Click OK.

3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by altering your msconfig. Here is how:

1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"
4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab
5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.
6. Click "OK"

Why is my laptop so slow?

I bought a new samsung laptop about a year ago and it was pretty slow to start with. Internet pages too a while to load up as did programs like word, it took ages just to open a new page or save something. Well, when i mean ages, i mean a few seconds. But arent new laptops meant to be realy fast, and be able to open new word doucments instantly, without that annoying circle loading icon coming up.

It has 3gb ram, which is meant to be good right, so it should run fast?? I had a compaq laptop before this and it was brilliant, so fast. I ending up breaking it and bought this, it was on offer for around £350 and had good reviews.

So anyway, i just thought the laptop was taking a while to get going and it would speed up, but it hasnt, and i couldnt be bothered to take it back, too much hassle. And obviously since then, ive installed a few things, used the internet loads, so im guessing ive got loads of crap like cookies or whatever, even though i have mcafee antivirus software. But its slowly getting worse.

But it was pretty slow to begin with, did i just get screwed with a bad laptop or what? And my fan seems to get really hot and starts making noises, then my laptop gets really slow. Programs freeze, the internt connections just stop, its a joke. What is going on?

well from your question something comes to mind right away, away from what you or anyone else may think, this problem, etc., is not only LAPTOP’s, this could and almost always is what could and does also happen to DESKTOPS.saying that, could be a few things, first thing comes to mind is what is and how many programs/software is loading as it boots up, more items and items that take a lot of resources cause PCs to go slow, or slower in time. things i would if it could be done is, add more RAM, and stop as much as possible from getting onto the RAM when you boot up.It could of course be a hardware problem, depending on either failure, or the hardware just getting old, and wearing out.As was said in one answer, you didn’t mention any of the specs, how old, was it new when you got it, what OS your using, and what is loading upon bootup, so in your doing that makes that much more difficult to answer your question, and to be more specific, and precise in our answer, sorry but true.
