Why Is My New Filter Already Dirty

Only one side of car air filter is dirty?

I checked my car's air filter today since the place I get my oil change at always tell me to change it. But only one side of the filter (the bottom one) is dirty. The top side (facing the hood) is like new. Can I just flip the air filter so the clean part is on the bottom. Since it seems it only uses the bottom part. Or should I buy a new air filter? I have the flat rectangular two sided air filter now. It is the paper air filter

WHY is my fish tank so dirty!! brand new filter, 10 gallon tank?

It is probably because the tank, as you describe it, is new and so it is just beginning to cycle. Cloudy water is normal during this time; that is called a "bacteria bloom" and would be the development of the beneficial bacteria that will help your fish feel more comfortable in the tank. It will clear up once your tank has finished cycling, so don't worry.

Here's some more information about the cycling process:

Also, from my own personal experience I found that while my tank is cycling, if I disturb the gravel in any way (i.e. while siphoning it) the water becomes cloudy, since I have also disturbed the bloom of the beneficial bacteria. It all settles down back at the bottom in a few hours, though.

By the way, what kind of fish do you have? Your tank might be overcrowded since a 10 gallon is quite small. That's another story, however.

Why is my new filter already dirty?

Brown and icky is a good thing. It's a Biological Filter, the "slime" is what actually filters the water, not the plastic sponge or floss, which is just inert plastic. A shiny clean new filter is practically useless.

Your filter wont be cycled and working properly yet, but the slime and snail poop in there is a GOOD sign.

When the filter gets so full of crud that the water flow slows down, just take it out and rinse it in old tank water (when you do a water change) You don't want to get it spotlessly clean, just get most of the gunge out so the water flows properly again.

Because the tank is new and isn't cycled yet, don't add fish yet. Let the waste from the snails get the tanks nitrogen cycle started, and build up that bio-film in the filter .Plan to start adding fish in a couple of weeks.

Why does my A/C filter get dirty so fast?

Check your cold air return vents. There must be dirt build up in there. You should be able to vacuum them out. Do you have pets that shed a lot? Just try to figure out where the dirt is coming from.

What is the best way to clean dirty water in a fish tank?

There is a number of things people may be referring to when they talk about “dirty water”.Brown water, or tanninsWater that is brown in colour may look dirty and murky but it is usually the result of tannins being released from driftwood or dried leaves. This brown water is desirable for some species (certain tetras, catfish) and will only be harmful to fish that like very alkaline water. Generally isn't too much to worry about. If you want to remove the tannins, add carbon filtration.Green waterThis is caused by algae growing in the water, as far as I know it is completely harmless. To get rid of it reduce the hours of light that the tank receives. There are products that kill this algae but they can potentially cause issues by lowering the oxygen content of the water.Cloudy waterJust to make things difficult, cloudy water can be caused by either benign factors such as unwashed or agitated gravel, to dangerous factors such as ammonia spikes. If the water ever seems cloudy, it is best to test the ammonia. The cloudy water is actually a sign that good nitrifying bacteria are starting to grow in the tank, so keep the filter running and dont mess with the sponges in the filter and it will go away on its own, but if there are fish in there it would be best to change some of the water. If the water is cloudy due to increased floating particles, they will settle over time and the filter will also help catch them.TRUE dirty waterNow I will address water that is actually dirty and not just filled with particles. Actual dirty water is not noticeable to the human eye, the tank can look crystal clear but the fish can still be suffering in horrible conditions. This is why testing the water is so important. The key chemicals to test for (with a liquid test kit) are ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Ammonia and nitrite are extremely toxic and are why a tank needs a filter with an established bacteria colony. Nitrate on the other hand is not as toxic and we remove it by doing weekly partial water changes. All of the above options can be cured by changing the water, so I do consider that the best way to keep the water clean in an aquarium. As well as having decent filtration. Carbon is not necessary to have in your filter, but as stated above, it can remove brown water.

I HAVE PUT DIRTY GAS THAT HAS ClOGGED MY FilTER WHAT CAN I DO NOW?

That's going to be tough. You obviously need to replace the filter, but probably won't be enough.

If it were mine, I would try to get a siphon hose into the tank and take all the gas out. I would also replace the filter again in a month, or less. In the old days, I would have also put an additional filter in the line, but that's very difficult in modern cars.

This problem can go on for a long time, good luck.

Additional: my answer must have been pretty good since so many people essentially just copied those ideas.

Can i reuse my dirty filter cartidge?

The pads and the filter cartridges can be reused. To do it without tearing takes a little practice but is easy. If you squeeze it, you can tear it open. Get a bucket of water siphoned from the tank. It can be dirty with what you sucked from the bottom as long as it has a "pond" smell, not a sewer smell.

Dip the cartridge in the water and then slap the cartridge, not too hard, against a surface like the inside wall of a utility sink. Do this several times, always slapping the same side against the sink wall. You just want it cleaner, not 100%, not even 90% clean. Then put it back. You may break a few of them until you get it just right, but then not only do you save the cost of replacement, but the used filter is already charged with the nitrification bacteria that make the nitrogen cycle possible. The reused cartridges will remove finer particles and provide a more stable water quality than new pads.

Why is my fish tank getting so dirty?

How many fish do you have, what kind, in what size of tank?
Overcrowding can lead to bad water quality that deteriorates quickly even with regular water changes.
Also leads to very stressed, and often very dead fish.
Your tank needs to meet the adult size of the fish.

Do you have a working filter?
If not- as you stir sediment there is nothing to get it out of the water until it settles. Along with other problems not having a filter can cause. You need to get a filter at least for the size of tank you have- depending on how many fish, 10+ gallons more then your tank would not be a bad idea.

If you have a filter- have you performed maintenance on your filter recently?
Rinse the bio-filter in aquarium water, change out the chemical filter, and take the filter apart and make sure the impeller isn't gunked up. Also brush out any tubes leading in and out of the filter- and sponge down the scum built up on the rest of it. This should improve the water-flow through the filter and clean up your tank.

Is the water is greenish rather then brackish?
You may have an algae bloom. It doesn't sound like you are overfeeding- but you may need to check your nitrates and nitrites. If the tank is in direct sunlight, move it or place curtains/blinds on the window to cut down on the sun. If you have a tank light- don't leave it on for more then 6-8 hours, the light promotes algae growth.

Hope any of this helps~

What causes an oil filter to leak?

9 time out of ten, it's a problem with the gasket. the mating surface between the engine and the filter was dirty, a piece of the old gasket was stuck, the new gasket was not oiled, or the filter was overtightened or worse, cross threaded. Always apply and tighten the filter by hand, do not force on, and check for leaks by running the car and looking underneath, while the car is still jacked up. In case of a leak, get it fixed promptly. If it's a bad leak, tow it don't drive it. You may lose all your oil and seize the engine.Fast Eddie fixing and breaking cars for over 50 years

Can I drive my car with a bad oil filter?

If the filter is leaking slightly, that kind of bad, you have to be careful not to run low on oil. Actually that’s a good thing as it puts your car into a continuous oil-change regimen.if it’s leaking a LOT, like yo can smell oil, that can be bad. My friend’s Honda cube showed up one day reeking of oil, and on the news that day there was a notice that certain Honda oil filters were leaking due to some problem with the sealing ring. If it’s leaking enough to smell and drip onto a hot exhaust pipe, that could lead to an engine bay fire. Not likely, but possible. If the filter is just old, that’s not as bad as you might think. Hundreds of millions of engines have been run for decades with no filters at all. The VW bug engines had no oil filter and those engines would sometimes run 100,000 miles between valve jobs, pedal to the metal 90% of the time, and run just fine. Radial aircraft engines rarely had oil filters and they ran just fine too.But it’s not a very wise financial move— an oil filter is like $6, many folks can change their own in 5 minutes of dirty work, while engine failure will cost you thousands, so it’s not a good reward/risk ratio. Change your oil filter as the car manual suggests, even though it’s probably not needed to be changed quite that often. Better safe than sorry.
