Why Is Obamacare Punishing Those Who Have Health Insurance

What do you think of Obamacare?

“The Obamacare”, really Affordable Care Act, has two parts. One extended Medicaid, the program for the poor, to more people, particularly single people without children, who were not previously eligible. Unfortunately this became optional for states, so many people were STILL not covered.The second part set up a “marketplace” for individuals not poor enough for Medicaid and not covered by a health insurance plan from their employer. An attempt was made to keep it affordable by subsidizing the premiums. It still did not provide health care, just some sort of access to health insurance. It had several useful rules: children could remain on the parents’ insurance until age 26; insurance could not be denied because of pre-existing conditions; and there were minimum standards of coverage. These rules also applied to the insurance obtained through the employer.These did not provide insurance to ALL AMERICAN CITIZENS. There were big holes left. The states that did not extend Medicaid, of course. And there were people who could not afford the offerings of the “marketplace” no matter how they were subsidized. They were allowed to go without and not pay a penalty.Yes, it is a KLUGE. But the “public option” was not allowed. And the implementation was not entirely in good faith. And anything that is not national is going to be subject to the vagaries of the states’ politicians. It was a good start, considering what existed before.The original question has changed; the premise was that insurance was provided to all Americans, which is false.

Why is it considered illegal to not have health insurance?

How do I avoid paying for Health insurance in America and still be legal?In the U.S. it is NOT “illegal” to opt out of obtaining Health Insurance.Your choices as an alternative of securing “essential health benefits” are:Pay the Tax PenaltySeek an ExemptionThe Tax Penalty for 2016 is 2.5% of your total household Adjusted Gross Income, or $695 per adult and $347.50 per child to a maximum of $2,085.The tax/penalty can be considered an opportunity cost of purchasing your health insurance. In other words, you are foregoing the $2,085 (savings) off the cost of health insurance if you chose to secure coverage.Though not a huge incentive, in your example, $1,500/month or $18,000 per year would actually be net cost to you of $15,915.No doubt, that is a lot of money. Yet your exposure to a catastrophic loss because of unforeseen medical expenses to you or one of your family members is exponentially higher.

Isn't obamacare unconstitutional?

Doesn't it violate the thirteenth amenment? "Neither Slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or an place subject to their jurisdiction?" How is this constitutional? No trolls, please. I just want an answer to this question. Thank you in advance.

List of Pros and Cons for the Individual Mandate of Obamacare.?

The 2014 individual mandate means everyone must be insured (not that you have to buy insurance) by whatever means you choose including being covered by a spouse, parent, employer, or buying it from the new exchanges. The fine wont take place if you are so low income you dont file a tax return and the IRS cannot impose a tax penalty, but you didnt mention the tax credit you get which subsidizes your cost. If you are very low income you may be eligible for Medicaid if you meet other criteria.

You are wrong about federal power. The states have authority over health insurance through a state Insurance Commission. However, each state is mandated by federal law to make insurance available through the exchange. The federal government has the power to regulate economic activity and that is the basis for the insurance mandate. If each state were able to subsidize health care for its residents, the federal government wouldnt have to do it.

What is the moderate view on healthcare?

The system has problems that any cooperation running it, independent of the government, could fix.
Our government does not have the ability nor the desire to fix the problem.

What is "Obamacare" exactly?

Outlined in Obama's points for health care reform are summarised as follow:
•Insurance reforms to protect consumers from insurance company worst-practices – like denying coverage based on pre-existing conditions, capping total coverage, and dropping or watering down coverage when you get sick and need it most
•Consumer protections that will restrict how much of your premium dollars insurance companies can spend on marketing, profits, and salaries
•Creation of a health exchange to increase consumer choice and guarantee coverage
•Affordable health options, with subsidies for working families and a hardship waiver
•Tax credits to help small businesses afford coverage
•Making preventive care completely free – with no co-payments or deductibles
•Lowering the cost of health care for our seniors
•Improving the quality and extending the life of Medicare
•Ensuring that reform is not only fully paid for, but actually significantly reduces the federal deficit

Why the need for reform?
*health care insurance premiums DOUBLED from 2000 to 2008, and is expected to DOUBLE within the next decade, putting more people not able to afford it;
*some 30 million people are not covered by health care insurance, and 80% of these people are working people who are too poor to afford insurance or are denied because of pre-existing conditions;
*many people with health care insurance now are exploited by insurance companies' worst practices and got watered-down versions or were being dropped totally;

Should fat people be denied healthcare?

People that don't take care of themselves drive up healthcare costs. They are ruining our country with their fat lazy bodies. Why should I pay for them to eat Cheetos all day and get a heart transplant???
