Why People Make Movies That Are Purposely Grainy Like Black Swan What

Why are films/movies nowadays so dark, like literally, it seems that every show are filmed at night, or if not in dark rooms?

That and actors mumble their lines.Personally, I think it’s because the filmmaking technology is advancing much faster than what the average consumer is watching movies on. In a theater it’s not a problem, or watching the film on your tablet with headphones on, but in terms of the average person sitting in their living room watching a movie on anything less than a full HD large screen set hooked up to a very decent sound system, they’re going to have trouble seeing and hearing the film as intended. For comparison, in music recording studios we have several sets of speakers in the control room ranging from top of the line studio monitors down to general consumer boom box speakers, because we want to make sure it sounds good for everyone from the gear head who spends ridiculous money on their system on down to the person listening to it on whatever earphones the thing they’re playing it on came with.It doesn’t escape me as an actor that if it weren’t for high quality films and television programs, no one would feel the need to upgrade their television or home theater, because no one needs to see the news or Seinfeld reruns in 8k HDR—but Star Trek Voyager or Westworld they do.Of course it’s primarily because the better the filmmaking technology gets the more realistic we can make it for you, but the biproduct is that it forces you to buy a better television and sound system to enjoy your favorite shows and movies.Another comparison, look at Disney and Pixar. Everything they make is very bright and clear. It looks amazing in 8k HDR, but it also looks great on an old tube TV or smart phone screen. They want you to see it in the theater on opening weekend like all studios, but they also want kids and grandkids of the children who first went nuts for Nemo and Toy Story to be fans too.The other studios generally aren’t looking to make classics. They’re in for the short sell, the quick money.

Why do some people enjoy horror and torture movies?

Shock.  We as a society like to see things that shock us.  It's why we used to watch executions on the square.  It's why crowds gathered for hangings.  It's why we slow down on the freeway to view that car accident.  It's why we watch those shocking videos on Youtube.  We loved to be shocked.  And what drives this is curiosity.  We are a very curious race.  We ask strange questions to ourselves in the dark of night.  "I wonder what it's like to rob a bank?""I wonder what it's like to kill someone?"  "I wonder what it's like to see someone tortured?"  "I wonder what it is like to be a serial killer?"These are dark questions that our curiosity within can't help but ask.  It's about our minds trying to make sense of it all.  Trying to figure out how such things can happen, why they happen, how they happen, and how we would feel if it happened to us.Thankfully, most of us have the moral compass to reject such notions and to reject taking such curiosity to dangerous and immoral levels.     With Saw, and other horror movies, we allow the filmmakers to present answers to such questions for us.  And we experience them in a moral manner without guilt because we know that in the end, it's all smoke and mirrors.  An illusion.  No one is really getting hurt.  And back in olden times, when public executions were a town, and sometimes family, event to witness, those citizens had detachment of guilt and shame because it was an authoritative action that they had no control over.      Our curiosity leads us to the thrill of being shocked.  That's why the Saw films are so successful.  That's why the horror genre is so impenetrable and has been since films like Nosferatu.  Beyond the ever present gore of the Saw franchise films, the added brilliance of them is not necessarily the end result of the physical and psychological torture, but the tension that is built in those moments before the character's eventual fate.  It's a thrill.  A shocking thrill that gets our adrenaline going.

Why do people consider dark and non entertaining movies as good but light hearted entertaining movies as bad movies?

It isn't that people don't like light hearted movies at all but there should always be a variety in what they are presenting in the movie. Dark movies manage to do that and also they give out life learnings and show the reality of the society in which we are living. Whereas most of the Light hearted entertaining movies are based on the same formula i.e to cast a superstar and a comedian, come up with same old love stories and make a trending singer and rapper sing the songs in the movie and shoot in some foreign locations and have a high budget with lot of publicity . People love it and pay double the price for tickets if they want to as the publicity done is so well but still the don't get that paisa Vasool experience after watching. I don't say that all light hearted movies are the same.. There are few movies which manage to win hearts of people by coming up with different storyline and I personally enjoy and support such movies but this case is very rare. Normally the dark movies manage to come up with versitality always!

Are there any movies about getting too obsessed with perfection to enjoy yourself?

Black Swan. The theme of perfection runs throughout. The last word in the film is “perfect.”There is a great line in the film where someone says “"perfection is about control but it's also about letting go.” The really resonated with me because, in many ways it seemed to be saying what Inhave been feeling about film for years, that there is too much emphasis on state of the art technical perfection instead of good storyteking. Producers know that that, if they can dazzle an audience with great special effects, they might be able to get away with a faulty storyline and not have anyone notice. Black Swan was a relatively low budget film so it is pretty rough around the edges with shaky, grainy camera work, deliberately imperfect to match the theme of the film. That said, the special effects were pre state of the art.
