Why You Will Wish To Study A Master Of Public Health Program When You Have Already Completed A Mbbs

What do you do with a public health degree?

"Powder93,"

A Bachelor's degree in Public Health typically concentrates on two disciplines; Biostatistics and Epidemology.

The degree is quite new and students who major in Public Health will do anything from attend medical school to law school. Or work for a government agency such as the CDC or the NIH.

If you are interested in the public research and implementation of health services, than this degree may be of interest to you.

What are your long-term career goals?

I would suggest that you take a look at Pfizer's "What is Public Health" website (listed below), so that you may get a better understanding of the Public Health Program.

Hope that helps!

I have completed MBBS from India. Now I want to apply for Masters in Public Health in Canada? What are the career growth after completing this course ?

Multiple options are present.Consider 2 scenarios: if you return back to India/if you stay back in Canada.A. If you return back to India-You can get jobs in any of the hospitals, nursing homes and private clinics. Salary always varies! But a master in public health should go for more government oriented jobs such as the chief of primary health care centres, health administrators in BMC, chief health officer of a taluka/district.You can give the combined medical services examination which the UPSC board holds and obviously your credentials will be enough for you to get involved in policy making, implementation and even rural health development officers.I personally would recommend the last one as it gives a more justified salary, government perks and a lot of power in health area. The last option is that of a teacher, should you come back to India, multiple private as well government institutions will be able to give you he job of public health administration professor.B. If you stay back in CanadaYou obviously will work in the same sectors as above mentioned in India. The only difference will be the pay scale and the people you are working for.The loan returns, if you take one obviously, will be faster if you decide to stay back. The teacher option still remains open in Canada too! Also Canada has a special research labs across te universities where you can pursue your career in research if you are interested in doing so!The other and last option remains to pursue a PHd and start assisting a professor to enhance your knowledge on a learn and earn basis.Do what you think will suit you the best.Regards.

I know someone who thinks a Master's in Public Health will lead to a $100k/year job that involves giving doctors tools for patients, but that there will be around 25% free time. What are the job prospects for someone with a Master's in Public Health?

I graduated with a Master's in Public Health in the Health Management & Policy Department at the University of Michigan. I can list some of the jobs that my classmates have acquired, but keep in mind many of them actually have Master's in Health Services Administration Degrees.Healthcare consulting for companies like Deloitte and AccentureAdministrative fellowships at major health systems like Intermountain and MedStarAnalyst positions in state and federal governmentPositions at insurance companies (e.g. Blue Cross Blue Shield)Positions at private research institutions and think tanks (e.g. NORC)Positions at trade organizations (e.g. American College of Healthcare Executives)Positions in research or applied research at various UniversitiesSo these are a sampling of jobs within one department of public health. Opening up the list to jobs from the other departments (Epidemiology, Biostats, Health Behavior & Health Education, and Enviornmental Health) would greatly increase the variety.**Side note: The only TYPE of job on the list above that could command $100K upon graduation would be health care consulting. However, my peers who have taken consulting jobs have reported working significantly MORE than 40 hours/week. They’ve been called upon to work on a presentation overnight for the next morning, for instance. **

What are the possibilities that one can do after completing Masters of Public Health (MPH)?

There are actually quite a few varied options for someone with an MPH degree. The best option really depends on your own personal strengths, weaknesses, and motivations. Much of the choice really depends on whether your interest is in data analysis, or if it is working one-on-one with end-clients. In general, an MPH can take you in the direction of clinical healthcare as an epidemiologist, health educator, diabetes educator (when combined with an RD), or infection control specialist. It can also be useful in more traditional areas of public health working in a public health agency in the areas of epidemiology, environmental health, health promotion and disease prevention, policy planning, and administration.Another direction that is often overlooked is in a corporate environment. Many large industrial organizations hire health and safety personnel, epidemiologists, and health educators to identify and address risk factors for workplace health risks. A long-time friend of mine with an MPH worked for many years as an epidemiologist for a large oil company. Her job was to investigate possible health risks related to employee exposure to noise, various chemicals, back injuries, etc. Once a risk factor was identified, a multi-disciplinary team worked to develop a policy to mitigate the risk. Additionally, there are a number of consulting firms that specialize in epidemiological research, investigation of environmental health risks, and many other area in which an MPH is advantageous. Finally, there are many voluntary and charitable organizations that will hire staff with an MPH, such as the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, and many others.

I have finished MBBS and am not getting through the PG entrance exam. What should I do?

Depends a lot on your life goals, motivation, capabilities and persistence. If you think you have to specialize and you are ready to invest 1 more year to full time dedicated studies, then repeat and give the exam again. Make sure you work your ass off! I know people who have got amazing ranks and awesome PG seats in big places after repeating 2-4 years. You can also opt for DNB, Diploma courses, etc as soft options. If leaving India is not a problem and you are financially sound, you can try for US, UK or Australian PG entrance exams. A word of caution- they are easier to crack than Indian PG entrance exams but need huge financial and time investment. If you are tired of giving exams and just want to continue working as a doctor, you can get good pay in a PHC, offshore work in oil fields, Middle-East, Carribean, etc. The work is not challenging but the money is good. It might be a little unfulfilling though. If you think working as a family practice doc is not your thing, then you can try for alternate career options. Clinical Research is a promising field. You can take GRE and apply for MS or PhD programs in US which are related to clinical research. Highly promising career, but the lack of clinical work might be a downer. Also, the pay is not as good as a doc, but good enough. You can apply for MPH programs (Master in Public Health) which deal with epidemiology, biostatistics, bioinformatics and related fields. The future prospects are similar to MS or PhD programs. If you wanna earn big bucks, then MBA in healthcare management is a good option, epsecially from countries like US, UK, Canada. One option which a fairly large number of repeaters go for is UPSC. You can join IAS, IPS, IFS, etc. The exams are competitive, but again, easier than PG entrance exams. These guys also earn big bucks, but mostly through bribes. You have to be prepared to get your hands dirty.
