Will Foxtails In Feed Hurt My Horse

Horse "foaming" at the mouth while eating?

Why people waste their time and yours giving you those stupid ideas, I don't know...boredom maybe, or a perverse desire to participate. Don't worry about the foam, it is not unnatural, but the next time you have something done by the vet, just in passing, ask him about what would cause this?

Keeping an old horse sane while on an incredibly long stall rest?

I have a 15 year old thoroughbred that ran for 10 years and was recently kicked by another horse fracturing his ulna. This is his first serious injury. The vet says he can possibly recover if.....he's on stall rest for 6 months then stall rest and light walking for another 6 months. Translation, keep a super high activity level horse on stall rest for a year without foundering or re-injuring himself. I am looking for ways to keep him busy. Vet says the pain will keep him down for around a month, we are only buting him for around 10 days as we want him to keep himself down and his pain tolerance is insane. (He was kicked then ran around the arena 3 times before being caught he also has twisted his ankle before and even though he limps slightly he won't stop running and bouncing around, he can barely walk but he tried to drag me and my dad around because he saw a small clump of green foxtails to eat.) I need help on keeping him down for the other 11. I am going to try a jolly ball and the uncle jim's hanging stall lick things. I'm looking into calming supplements but don't know where to start because we never use them and I want something that wont hurt him when used for extended periods of time. He has to have significant space between him and other horses as he's horse aggressive (thats how the kicking started our big horse decided he would test him.) I'm going to look into feeding him a different hay but we still have three weeks of college left so no one is home from 8am-10pm and we live in the middle of nowhere. I have seen jolly balls, hanging chews, hanging carrots/apples, mirrors and milk jugs. Any other ideas? I don't think those five things will keep him happy for 12 months(after 3-6 he will be able to go for walks), fortunately summer is near and my dad and I both have the summer off (thankfully he's a teacher.) The horse can walk about 50 feet or so a day on the lead, we live in AZ so zero grass but some green foxtails for now. He has a 12x12 breezeway stall will about a 14x12 outdoor he can go into so he can move around a little.
Thanks

Can wild onions baled in hay hurt horses??

My 26 year old appendix, Dallas, started urinating blood and clots on Monday afternoon. I took a sample to the vet. My vet asked me about poisonous plants in our pasture and I responded "no" to the usual suspects, but then he got to onions. Dallas had been eating over the garden fence last week and nibbled on some onion top leaves. So, YES, apparently onions (and I assume onion grass) can be seriously toxic. I just have to let it run through his system, but this is very scary!! I talked to two longtime horse-owner friends and they did not know onions were toxic either (so is cabbage)

Help . i think my cat has a fox-tail or burr in her throat?

i've had a friend whos kitty had the same thing and the vet said to give the kitty 'mineral oil' or something like that (lubricant) and the kitty was able to dislodge it herself .
that was almost 4 years ago . i cant remember exactly what it was .
Can anyone help ?

My border collie keeps licking the underneath of his paws and they look like they have been bleeding. Ideas?

Where do you live? It is foxtail season in southern California and the foxtail weed can be very hard on a dog's paws. They are like tiny little darts that get in between your dog's pads and if you don't remove them, they can actually work their way right into the skin. At that point you'll need to go to a vet to have them removed.

There are several things you can do to help your dog:

1. Trim the hair between the pads so it will be easier to detect foxtail or other injuries and harder for things to stick in there. There are small, inexpensive battery operated trimmers available at most pet stores or online at petedge.com that are made for this sort of trimming.

2. Get some Show Sheen or Laser Sheen. These are both horse grooming products and are available at feed stores and other places where horse related items are sold. Spray your dog's feet, legs, chest and tail thoroughly with this and rub it in before he goes out running in open fields and such and you will find that any weeds, sticks, brambles, etc. he may pick up while he's playing will just pull right out when you begin to groom him. The difference is really fantastic in ease of grooming between a dog that has been treated with Show Sheen or Laser Sheen and one that hasn't.

3. Border Collies are notorious for delicate pads, even though they have been bred as herding dogs. Many people use dog booties on their BCs, even when they're herding in trials or as actual working dogs. It sounds silly, but it isn't. Don't buy a cheap bootie from a pet store - go online and find one of the many places that sell high quality booties. Like I said, it's a common problem, so there are many places that make truly functional dog booties.

But first things first. If your dog's paws have been bleeding and/or they are obviously bothering him, you need to go to a vet and get the immediate problem taken care of before using the preventative measures I've recommended here.

Hope this is helpful.

Dog limping from front leg, should I take him to the vet or wait a few days?

I have a 3 year old German Shepherd that's been limping on his front leg for 3 days now. There is no clear cause and it doesn't appear to be causing any pain when I touch the leg. I am trying to let him rest most of the time but he wants to play fetch and walk so that tells me he is not bothered by it? His left front leg is stiff and won't contract completely. It appears to be either the elbow or shoulder joint that is the issue. I checked his toes/paw/nails/etc...Nothing seems wrong.

Does it sound serious? Should I wait before going to the vet?
Thank You

What would be the easiest and cheapest method to increase crop production and maintain soil fertility without harm to the crops?

This method is best suited for Indian farms. I've given the Tamil/Engish/Telugu/Hindi names. Groundnuts and Aamanakku can be used at around 4 kgs per acre.Separate the big, medium and small seeds. Mix them with some earth, compost or other medium and spread. I would personally add Rhizobium and azetobacter . The seeds may be soaked in panchakavya or other mediums prior to sowing.Growth period and Tilling The normal way to do this process is to grow the field for 50 to 60 days. This will allow a mix of growth levels to be achieved for different plants. Several of them will be flowering, fruiting or even ready to harvest. Till the soil well to return the crop to the earth. If the land is particularly chemical ridden, a multistage approach is recommended.  1. Sow the seeds, and till after 20 days2. Sow the seeds, and till after 60 days3. Sow the seeds, and till after 90 days. This is supposed to reduce chemical contamination in the soil and add biomass to badly damaged soil within 6 months. Most farmers can do this once for 45 days, mulch the green matter into the soil and then proceed to cultivation. Of course, no chemical/fertilizers/pesticides to be used afterward.

Pets: How would a dog react if I tried to lick its face?

Lots of great answers here and especially a good warning from Ian Armstrong. Face licking (particularly the nose as Greg Chalik pointed out) is a dog's way of showing a bond and submission in the pack.  If you lick your dog, you are sending an amazingly confusing signal effectively trying to lower your status in the pack by demonstrating a very intimate submissive behavior.  Depending on the typical relationship with the dog, the dog may react with a hyperactive movement indicating the beginning of play to an all out aggressive display based in fear or frustration.I haven't ever licked a dog but I've hugged and tickled and played with many of them.  My worst experience happened earlier this year while grooming the winery dog, a dog that I've known for over 6 years and lived with for two.  He was laying on the patio and I sat down to pet him and pulled out a few stray fox tails (none of which were stuck in - they were just laying in the fur). I moved from the neck and continued back slowly toward the haunches.  He was relaxed and calm, laying on his side, his tail was thumping the ground and he seemed to be very much enjoying the attention.Within the blink of an eye he turned up and back at me snapping at my face which I was lucky enough to move out of range.  I rolled back and away from him and he continued the attack biting me eight times in the back of my left arm through a t-shirt and long-sleeve flannel. Here's what I got:My point is that dogs do not think like us, communicate like us or behave like us.  Why would we want to act like them without knowing what it means to them? It could be dangerous at the worst and confusing at the least.Don't lick the dog, Stevie.  (Just sounds like a name of someone who needs careful instruction (sorry Steve)).UPDATE April 8, 2016:  The dog died this week.  The owner's daughter now lives at the property where the dog resides and noticed that he had blood all over his side.  Thinking that he had a laceration she rushed him to animal emergency only to find that the bleeding was internal and that he had probably regurgitated the blood and lain in it.  The owner was contacted overseas and he asked that nothing be done until he returned.  The dog died the day before he returned.  I am still torn about my feelings for that dog and I will miss the times we spent together.

Kind of a repost, sorry?

Original question:

Well, today or tomorrow I am mowing my field (I pray my friend lets me use his riding lawn mower that bags, other wise I'll have a lot of raking to do [I have a riding lawn mover, it doesn't bag though]) to get all the fox tails out (the worst thing on the worst to grow in my field), I'm almost done putting up fencing for this small yard (about the size of a normal yard), I'm putting Tango in it while I am mowing. How long should I keep him in there where any chemicals that could get onto the grass will be gone and won't hurt him? I was thinking two days. What's the best type pf grass seed to through into the pasture that will kill out the fox tails? I'll buy a couple bags and spread it around in there every year.

Different information: Well, you guys seem to think that the chemicals are weed killer, I was thinking of stuff from the lawn mower. I'm not going to use week killer. What type of grass seeds should I use (to get more grass out in the field, maybe if theres a lot of grass it'll kill off the fox tails).
