Will Men Be Intimated By Me If I Join The Air Force

Are you a coward if you're too scared to join the armed forces?

Only YOU can answer that question.Having served in the Marine Corps, I’ll be quite candid with you.Military life is NOT for everyone.Even among those who serve in the military… COMBAT is NOT for everyone, either. It takes someone pretty special, to serve… and there’s as many reasons to serve as there are people who DO serve. Some do it for love of country, either wholly or merely in part. Some are looking for work that pays more than they make flipping burgers. Some are looking for adventure. Some just want to test themselves and see if they’ve got what it takes. Some are looking for ‘free college’ after serving an enlistment. Some want to get away from a home or a community they don’t care for. Some are looking for the camaraderie found in the military. Some want to go into combat and whip an enemy of our nation. (Look at those who joined after 9–11 for good examples of that)I don’t think people are ‘too scared to join the military’.I think they’re scared of the UNKNOWN.I think they’re scared of getting shot full of holes, or having parts of their body that they like having, blown clean off of them.I think they’re scared of having to kill someone in war. Some are scared they’ll get in, and find they don’t care much for it.I think it’s worth it for someone to really look at WHY they’re afraid of joining…I think it’s also worth it for someone to really look at WHY they want to serve, if they do, in fact, want to serve. The risks are there… no question about it.There are rewards to go with those risks, too! It’s up to every man and woman to decide for THEMSELVES whether the risks outweigh the rewards… or the rewards outweigh the risks, FOR THEM.

Questions about the Air Force?

So I am a 22 y/o female. I am finishing my Masters in May and have decided to join the Air Force after I graduate. I want to become an officer. I have already contacted a recruiter and am currently studying for the AFOQT (terrified). I have a few simple, yet important questions I would like answers to that I really don't want to bug my recruiter with if I can find the answers out myself so here it goes :)

---My hair is a tad longer than shoulder length, but because of the layers I have, it's not long enough to put into a bun. How should I handle that? Also, I know I'm allowed to keep my hair longer, but do most women in the service just cut their hair so they don't have to worry about it? I don't want to be the only girl with long hair when I get to training =/

---Can I bring a cell phone? This isn't that important, more just curiosity. I can't find anything on the website in regards to cellular devices.

---In your opinion, is intelligence or cyber ops the better option? I've read the career descriptions and researched them extensively, and both sound right up my alley. Just curious what the broader population would recommend.

---I wear glasses, is that a problem? Will they give me regulation glasses, or will I be able to wear the ones I have?

---FEMALE QUESTION (fair warning to the guys, sorry!) Will I be able to take my birth control? And as far as that time of the month, do they have rules about what protection I'm allowed to wear (tampons, pads, etc). This may be a really stupid question, but I don't want to be "that girl" with issues when I arrive.

I know there are other questions that I have, but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Thanks for the help!

Do female cops join the force because they want to become macho or did daddy want a boy?

I'm sure all daddy's want a boy....but that's irrelevant.

I have several reasons....yes, I like the feeling of the badge, I like guns and donuts, and I like to drive fast. But it's more than that. I like the independence and autonomy of the individuals, but also the knowledge that every single other cop has my back. I want to do something I can be proud of. I want to help people, and get criminals off the streets. I know the dangers and the stresses of consistently seeing the worst in society, but the one time I can save someones life will make it all worthwhile.

REPLY: Actually yes, I did play with dolls and frilly things. I had barbies and hair bows, I was a cheerleader... I wear a lot of pink, I love heels. I can cook, I can sew. I'm not worried about turning out like Rosie, I know it will never happen. I may be pursuing a male dominated career but I'm a woman, through and through. Are you intimidated by tough, driven females?

How do you prepare for Air Force basic training?

Sarah,
Glad to hear you are wanting to prepare and do well which is the attitude you need to get far in the Air Force.
Ok, this is my take on preparing for AF BMT.

Do not focus a lot on weight training, as there will be no weight training in BMT. I would limit weight training to 1 time a week and focus on the following for each category of the PT test. This is hardcore, but will make you stand out for the better in BMT. People who do well on PT, will do well everywhere else and stay off the TI's negative radar.

RUN: Pounding out 30 minute runs will help your endurance, but will not make you much faster. To drop your 1.5 mile time fast, do interval running. Go to a track and:
Run 2 laps at a jog pace
Stretch out for 3 minutes
Run 1 lap 75% sprint pace
Walk a lap
Run 1 lap 75% sprint pace
Walk a lap
Then do half lap sprint, half lap walk/slow jog for 4 laps(1 mile).
Walk another lap for cool-down.
Even though the entire run workout is only 2 miles distance, it will give you 5 times the results of a slow 30 minute run, guaranteed. Do this 2 times a week with a 30 minute run the 3rd run day of the week.
No track? do it by running city blocks, telephone pole to telephone pole, etc...be creative.
If you are really gung ho, do 10-15 pushups in between each run during your walking lap.
PUSH UPS: Do a lot of them throughout the day. 25 in the a.m. 50 lunchtime, 50 at night 3 times a week. Type in "Burpees exercise" on youtube and do these other days.
SIT-UPS: Do them correctly with arms across chest with elbows hitting your quads. 100 of these, 3 times a week. Only way to get better at these is to rock out with repitition.
Swimming is a great way to work out. It will help you in all the areas of the PT test and is fun to do as well.

Email me for more workout tips, I am a fitness guru and do some very hardcore stuff. My wife and I trained before she joined the AF... she graduated top PT performer in BMT(Aug 2008) and beat 75% of the guys at her final eval.
Her scores:
9:41 1.5 mile run
57 Push-ups 1 min
58 Sit-ups 1 min
11 pull-ups

She started out much less than this and worked towards it. Believe me, if you want a much easier time at BMT, show up blowing the minimum standard out of the water, you will thank yourself the entire time and be highlighted by your TI in a good way.

Is the Air Force really full of wussies?

I want to join the Air Force because I hear that they are treated better and have a better quality of life, but I want the "military experience". By that I mean that I dont really want to live like a civilian wearing a military uniform. I would be joining as an officer, though, so im not sure the officer are treated the same/have the same QOL in both branches. Recently I've been thinking about the Army. There are more job opportunities (very few in the air force) and they are deployed more (which I would love). I also really don't want to think I joined the "weak branch". I see soldiers and marines making comments about how the USAF is full of wussies. Is this just a bad stereotype? I know the pfts are slightly harder for the other branches, but not by much.

What do you think of the Air Force?
Officer life: Army vs. Air Force?
Any stories that show what life os like for both?
What are the bases like?

*If it makes a difference, I am female. Though I want to have a combat MOS, I can't yet.

What happens in Indian Armed Forces parties or get-togethers?

I don't know how you got this ideas!!  I have retired after 27 years in the IAF.  Of this, I have spent three years along with an Army's Corps HQ.  Most parties are 'obligatory' for all the officers of the Unit.  It is almost considered as part of your main duty.  If you want to be absent, it would be just because you are not available in the station due to out-station duty or otherwise, you are sick.  The atmosphere in most units is like it is an extended family.  Often, if the officer is away on duty and the wife is alone in the house when there is a party going on, the other ladies and officers almost 'force' that lady to attend parties. But, let me tell you that I have seen some parties after joining corporate world.  It is here that I found most males (and rearely, some females too) getting drunk in the first few minutes of the party.  Then the misbehavior starts.  Although such scenes occasionally do happen in parties held in military establishments, that officer is severely admonished one one of the next days and usually, a repetition of the same is never seen from him.  Mostly, I would say that the military officers know how to behave even after drinks and would establish a self-restraint on their own capability to hold drinks. Finally, let me be very blunt and come to another point.  I guess you could be asking about some sexually abusive behaviour of the officers with other ladies during party.  Any kind of indecent behaviour with ladies is not tolerated in the armed forces since times immemorial.  It is a severe offence and the officer could even be 'cashiered' for such indiscretion.  In situations other than parties, there could have been occasions when one officer has got too close with another officer's wife.  If such act comes to light, usually it ends up with cashiering of the officer involved.  As far as the lady is considered, it is between her and her husband.

My son is gay and wants to be a Marine drill instructor will it be allowed?

As a Retired USAF Officer let me say this. Things have changed considerably since the Politically Correct crowd has slithered its' way into everything Military. My grandson is a SFC Paratrooper in the Army and he is forced to accept the changes. He does that but is not happy about it.
For a gay man to think he could be an effective Drill Sergeant, especially in the Marines, is naive at best.
It is not a matter of his being allowed. He would have to complete Basic Training; and Marine Boot Camp is pretty much the most insensitive and least compassionate time imaginable.
If he could complete Boot Camp he would then have to apply for the DI School and be recommended by a board of Officers and NCOs.
In my personal opinion this board would never recommend him for the job.

I would advise he join a much gentler and more politically correct branch such as the Air Force.
