What is it like for a North Indian to live in Maharashtra after the rise of Raj Thackeray?
I have lived in Mumbai for 8 years now. I am a Bihari. I don't know much Marathi. I can understand some but not speak at all. I have lived through the time when there was a backlash against North Indians.Believe me, I have never faced any issue. I have quite a few marathi friends in my friend circle (in fact I think I have more marathi friends now...not that I care to count). I have also had bosses, colleagues, juniors, direct reportees, indirect reportees, maids, car cleaners, milk walah, paper walah who were/are Marathis. I don't think I have ever had any issue with any of them. Except for one land lord. But then land lords can be assholes irrespective of language they speak. I think Marathis, in general, are very nice people as they are conservative and don't show off. They like following rules, for instance making and following queues. They have good work culture, are obedient towards their parents, they are creative and have very good social values. There have been many great artists and performers from Marathis like Lata mangeshkar, Sachin tendulkar, Asha bhonsle, Nana patekar, Madhuri Dixit etc to name a few.One thing that Raj Thackray says is that Marathis should get preference in jobs in Mumbai & Maharashtra and this is something I agree to. Imagine UP is a really developed state and Lucknow is a great city with great employment potential. Suddenly a lot of Kannadigas throng there and take up all the available low/medium level jobs and they are preferred by businesses as they are ready to work for much less compared to UPites. Don't you think there will be indignation and probably a severe backlast against Kannadigas ? Again, what Raj says is correct. However, the way he goes about doing it is not correct. Violence is not the way.He should also work towards skill up-gradation of local people. Moreover he should also convince them to take up jobs which they do not take due to society issues like auto/taxi business.P.S.
