Will The Ashes Be Home By Christmas

A christmas carol by charles dickens?

his qeust to find goodness

How about some simple Christmas Haiku?

Slow winter nights
Orange fires pop and burn
We sit stare and glow

Long silver tinsel
Draped across our Christmas tree
Sparkles and shines

Red decorations
Affixed and perfectly placed
Waiting for the day

Popcorn cranberries
Woven through blue spruce branches
Winter birds welcome

Under the covers
Expensive diamonds glitter
Warm magic happens

On cold nights somewhere
This dream will never happen
Fire, war, terror, death

How did you make Christmas better for someone within your family?

The year after my father and my eldest brother-in-law passed away, no one in my husband’s family or myself felt much like celebrating Christmas any more. The empty places at the table were hardest to bear at Christmas. It was a sad and bleak time for us.My brother-in-law’s widow had finally packed away her husband’s things. She wanted to scatter his ashes over his favourite fishing spot and asked if the family could do it with her over Christmas. No one was up to cooking a traditional Christmas feast that year. But I wanted the occasion to be a positive one for us. A time for closure, for the family to come together and celebrate the happy memories we had of our loved ones.As Christmas fell within the heat of summer for us in Australia, I decided that we should have a picnic by the river. It took some convincing but I managed to get my mother-in-law, my husband’s other brother, his aunt and uncle, as well as his mother’s best friends to come along as well. Everyone brought a plate. Pasta, salads, fruits, bread, cheese, nuts, cold meats and drinks.I encouraged my husband to bring his fishing rods. He and his niece ended up each wetting a line. They had a good time as he told her stories of how he and his brothers got into mischief as boys.A warm comforting glow seemed to settle over everyone that day. We ate, drank, smiled at each other and laughed out loud possibly for the first time in several months. When the time came, we each took a small pinch of ash and cast it over the water. The afternoon sun shone down on us like a blessing, calm and peaceful, with goodwill to all.It was a good Christmas.

World War I was pretty gruesome. Aside from the Christmas Truce, what are some examples of good guys doing righteous things in war?

Unfortunately, this British soldier was said to be too kind at the wrong time:British soldier allegedly spares the life of an injured Adolf Hitler - Sep 28, 1918 - HISTORY.com"Private Henry Tandey, a British soldier serving near the French village of Marcoing, reportedly encounters a wounded German soldier and declines to shoot him, sparing the life of 29-year-old Lance Corporal Adolf Hitler." "As Tandey later told sources, during the final moments of that battle, as the German troops were in retreat, a wounded German soldier entered Tandey’s line of fire. “I took aim but couldn’t shoot a wounded man,” Tandey remembered, “so I let him go.” The German soldier nodded in thanks, and disappeared."" As the story goes, when British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain traveled to Germany in 1938 to engage Hitler in a last-ditch effort to avoid another war in Europe, he was taken by the führer to his new country retreat in Bavaria. There, Hitler showed Chamberlain his copy of the Matania painting, commenting, “That’s the man who nearly shot me.”"Sick, if true.  No good deed goes unpunished by some." “If I’d known who he’d turned out to be I’m darned he’d have got off,” Tandey said in 1940, after German bombers under Hitler’s command flattened his Coventry home. "  Coventry was famously bombed to ashes in a fire storm, as you know. Here is a copy of the picture Hitler owned, which is "odd" for a man who suffered so much gas blindness in that campaign, and told Chamberlain that that man shown refused to take his life: The man who didn’t kill Hitler | Toronto Star

What does the term "ashes and wine" mean?

Beside's the obvious "ashes" referring to the end of a relationship, there is also the religious symbolism.

I'm sure there are others who know more about it, but I think it's referencing the communion tradition in Catholicism of using ashes...and then there's the wine used in Holy communion.

....could be the origin that the writer used to add a sacred element

I'm interested in hearing that song now! :)

In the story Angela's Ashes, what were certain historical or social issues mentioned in the story?

There are many social and historical issues in the novel. Examples:

Social issue (Poverty): The family were always starving and they had nothing to eat. Frank steals food. They had old potatoes for dinner. for Christmas, they eat a pig's head. The family is cramped in the tenement.

Historical issue: The Irish vs. The English

The history: English invaded Ireland and supplanted either Scottish or English lords all over the country to subdue the population. England assumed that Ireland was 'part' of England, under English laws, and government. This is colonization. During Ireland's past, the people have tried through peaceful and not so peaceful ways (IRA) to become free of English rule, and govern themselves.

In the novel: Malachy comes home drunk and sings songs against the English. He says that he'll give them a penny if the boys are willing to die for Ireland.
