It is my understanding that they fled to egypt. I do not recall any mention of where John the Baptist's folks may have gone but given the close personal relationship between the mom's of both I would assume they traveled together. Since it was a covert type of 'black ops' mission I would suspect that no record of it would be found in any Roman texts or legal documents much the same way that modern covert operations are not publicized. Also, the towns and villages affected were populated by folks who were illiterate so the only place I would look for collaborating documentation of this event would be the writings of Jewish Scribes who either witnessed it or heard the accounts of those who witnessed it. The Bible is a select collection of some of those Scribes' texts so there may also other texts which give an account. If so, I am not aware of them. Perhaps in some of the Gnostic Gospel accounts not included in the catholic canon but I have not read them all and some are partially lost.
