Append vs Overwrite??

Overwriting a backup is erasing the entire thing and starting over. Appending is adding to an existing backup. If you were using a backup tape for example, an append job would start where the last job on the tape finished. An overwrite job would start at the beginning, erasing what is there.

When your software asks you for overwrite and append periods, it wants you to state how much time must pass before it can append to or overwrite an existing backup.

The overwrite period is more obvious - how long to you want to retain a backup before it can be overwritten? The append period is how much time must pass before you want to allow additions to the backup file. You can of course set these so that no time needs to pass.

I have been running backups professionally for five years and both my append and overwrite periods are set to none. However, I automatically eject my tapes and change them manually everyday. If you're using backup files or other media that doesn't automatically remove itself, I wouldn't set the periods to none.

How long does it take to overwrite a deleted file?

When I delete a movie, picture, word document - etc, I know it isn't "permanently" deleted.

How long does it take for a file to be overwritten to a point where it can no longer be retrieved? I don't feel like D-banning a hard drive because the information isn't that sensitive, but I question the reliability of the "recycle bin."

I remember accidentally deleting a college paper and spending days trying to recover it through online software, but even then I only managed to retrieve a few pages.

thanks

Adobe photoshop "command not available"?

You may have your problem images in a mode other than RGB. Many Layer Styles and Effects are not available except on an RGB image. To correct this, menu Image > Mode > RGB Color. You will now have all the features of the program available to you.

Mujer has given you some good advice and some that is not fully explained.

First paragraph, a Drop Shadow can be applied to an layer the same size as the image. It is that you just cannot see it. Apply a drop shadow and then Resize the Canvas and low and behold, there is the drop shadow. Getting to this point also involves the next comment.

Second paragraph, attempting to apply a style to the Background layer will cause a popup to appear stating that this can only be done on a regular layer (or words to that effect). Clicking OK causes this layer to be created from the Background layer. This happens with every Layer Style. Also, applying an effect such as Photo Effect, Vintage Photo, Monotone Color, is done by the addition of a layer for the effect. These are actions in reality that first create the layer and then apply the effect.

Third paragraph, good advice, don't work with the original. The method suggested works only because on saving a file with a layer it will default to save as a PSD file. If the original had already been created as a PSD file, the method suggested will overwrite the original. Better yet is to create a Duplicate copy of the image. This is done by menu File > Duplicate. To the image name will be added the word "copy" and if repeated "copy 2" is added. This assures that the original file will not be overwritten without specific user input to change the name.
