Would A Long Black Satin Dress Be Ok For A Formal Uni Graduation Evening Party

What to wear to college graduation?

I'm attending my bf's college graduation tomorrow at University of WI Stout. There is a nice dinner for all the graduates and their guests following the ceremony. I don't know how formal the event is. He has no idea what I should wear either. I don't want to stand out. How dressy should I be?

Is a black suit (as opposed to a tuxedo) adequate for a black tie event?

A black tie event requires a black tie, and an even more elevated event requesting a white tie requires a white tie.  A black suit, even though similar in color, is not an acceptable alternative to a black tie. Hierarchy:Whenever: Suit or separatesDress how you want to dress on your own time.Semi-Formal: Black TieThis black tie has peak lapels, but they are also cut in shawl collar:If the invitation says "Black Tie", it's semi-formal.  It if says,"Black Tie Optional", "Black Tie Welcome", "Cocktail Attire" and the event is in the evening, black tie is encouraged. Formal: White TieIt is a formal event. It will be after 6:00 PM. It may not say, "White Tie" because it is assumed you know this and know how to dress appropriately. Is a black suit (as opposed to a tuxedo) adequate for a black tie event? No, it is not acceptable to wear a black suit in lieu of a black tie.  There are dress protocols to follow when you're being invited to affairs that request certain attire. Hope this helps!

I'm going to attend my ex's wedding, which one of the following dress should I wear?

I agree with Kathleen Byrne; none of these dresses are very appropriate for being a guest at a wedding. However, if these are your only options, go with the last one, the light pink one, but perhaps try to find it in a darker color, such as a royal blue or possibly plum? The red one, while it is pretty, is not a wedding color. Also, people typically see vivid red dresses as seductive, and that is definitely inappropriate for a wedding. The middle two are too tight and thigh-high slits in dresses do NOT give good impressions, and it may appear as though you are trying to steal your ex from the woman he is marrying. Does that send the message you want it to?  The last is the best. If the wedding will be that fancy, I say go for it in a darker color. If you think you might be as dressy as the bridesmaids or the bride, look for something else. You could always try a nice, respectable, black dress or skirt and nice blouse. If it was your wedding day, would you want your future husband's ex do be wearing any of the things that you are considering? Just food for thought. Try shopping at JCPenny, Carson's, or Macy's. Stores like these have nice clothes that are appropriate for weddings and that can be worn for multiple occasions. Plus, you might save a bit of money than if you were to buy a prom dress. Just remember--be happy for the bride and groom, and enjoy yourself at the wedding. Don't try to show anybody up. Be sure to congratulate the new couple. Good luck!
