Would One Be Able To Speak To A Recruiter Even At A Very Young Age Like Say 13 Years Of Age

Is software development really a dead-end job after age 35-40?

A software developer I know recently got a call from a recruiter at Google, asking what it would take for him to come to work for them. This developer had actually already worked for Google, but he left about five years ago to pursue other projects, and he didn’t want to live in one of the cities that have a Google office. Even though he didn’t have a degree in computer science and never took a college course in OOP, he must have impressed them enough to keep him on the recruitment list these years later. The recruiter suggested maybe he could be interested in interviewing with the Project Loon team in Singapore. He gave a little chuckle to the recruiter over the phone, and his first question was: You know how old I am, right? The recruiter confirmed that yes, his date of birth was on file, and that Google didn’t factor age into its recruitment policies. The developer agreed to think about the prospect and they agreed to touch base again in a week. That 66-year-old developer is my father. He is collecting social security while being courted by Google. He had a fulfilling career running his own company, consulting, and being an employee. He made contributions during the early stages of numerous technologies such as TCP networking, USB protocols, 802.11b implementation, and military GPS. Then he was hired by Google in 2008, when he was 58.While at Google, he wrote software in Java, a language that wasn’t even invented until he was 45. And he was an individual contributor, without having any other engineer report to him.One of the great things about software development is it’s all about your passion to learn and ability to perform, which is demonstrated by my dad’s career and the careers of thousands others. If you don’t have those required ingredients, then sure, software development is a dead-end job at any age. But if you have the passion and skill, then it is not a dead-end job after 40, 50, or even 60.

Is 15 too young to decide you want to join the military when you become of age?

That's great and all, but how about your ASVAB? That's the first thing you do when you go to MEPS. And have you started talking to a recruiter? If you tell them you wanna join now, then once you do become a senior in high school, it should be a breeze to get in (for those that didn't know, you can actually go to Basic during summer of your last year in high school). But the first thing you need to worry about is study, study, study. Especially in today's Army. You won't get anywhere without some sort of degree, if you want to make it a career.

Anyways, it's a very good lifestyle to get into. The military will look out for you, and you can get a lot of benefits if you can play your cards right. You can never start to early when it comes to thinking about your future. Just don't neglect the present.

Raising the military enlistment age to 21?

Good Thinking!!! I agree with you. Either lower the drinking age to 18, )if you are old enough to fight and die, you're old enough to drink) or raise the enlistment age to 21 (best choice). Otherwise it is VERY hypocritical.

Again I agree and excellent point!

Can I join the marines even if I have asthma?

Yes, but you will have to get waivered by the docs at MEPS. Talk with a recruiter and see what they say. Sometimes they will make people get a stress test to see if the asthma gets bad under stress. Good luck.

I'm 35 years old. Am I too old to join Google, Facebook, Microsoft or Apple as a software engineer?

Of course you’re too old to join those companies. You think they’re going to hire you walking in with grey hair, a cane and asking when nap time is? You think they want to be around someone who has to go to the bathroom more than twice a day? Dude, you’re a fossil. It’s time to think about retirement. Coding skillz begins to drop around 35. How are you going to work 12 hour days and weekends with your wife and kids?? Bro, you know no one at FB, MSFT, Google and Apple even have kids right? If you do they lay you off (its part of the agreement when they hire you). You think anyone there will want to hear about your family and your boring life when what you should be doing is coding, partying and traveling the world to find your zen. Code, curls and girls === life. And what about all the free food and soda that you can’t take advantage of because you have to eat healthy due to your age? You’ll be a social outcast if you don’t live on chips, ramen, chocolate, soda, protein drinks and Soylent. Do you drink brah? Do you even play binary beer pong?? How are you going to chug back those beers with your 35 year old liver? I bet that organ is on life support at such an old age. You also can’t even drink 10 red bulls a day since you probably have diabetes. Even if you did get hired I doubt you’d have the respect of your colleagues (who will be, at oldest, 29). How are you even going to communicate with them unless you have Whatsapp, Snapchat and an Instagram account? You think they’ll accept you and your outdated Facebook account? Btw, you do have a Tesla right? Can’t drive into work without one of those. Don’t set yourself up to be a loser. Stand aside and let the 23 year olds code hard and code often while you go 127.0.0.1.Ignore the above paragraph. No you are not too old to work at those places at 35. You’ll be fine at 35. You’ll probably be fine all the way to 60 working at those companies. You can work anywhere at anytime at any age (though you may have to deal with some ageism). Just stay healthy, learn stuff and find someone to settle down with. That’s pretty much life. FYI, I’m in my earlier 30’s and still a software engineer at MSFT.

Am I Ranger material?

You can be a Ranger without all that crap. Judging from your resume' thus far, the one thing I can see in your future is a lifetime of blanket parties and being left in the woods with no map or compass.....by your fellow Rangers.
