Would You Want To Be One Of The First African Americans To Attend This School Why Or Why Not

Why Americans are so against Immigrants (illegal or not)?

First of all, let me start by saying that I was born in America and my parents were once immigrants. My mom is from Brazil and my dad is from Middle East. I'm happy that I am mixed because I can experience two different culture =p

Well I just don't understand why ppl are so against immigrants... especially Mexican immigrants. All they want is a better life, and America has the best to offer it. Wouldn’t u want the best possible life?

Do u have any idea what they have to go through to jump the border? I know this Mexican construction worker who said he paid $1000 to a group of guys to help him jump the border (of course there was more ppl along with him) He told me during the trip he witnessed women being raped, children dying of hunger/thirst and travelers just collapsing from the hot weather. It’s kinda sad when they realize they have to go back to their country.

Okay so I know this girl in my school that is very racist against illegal immigrants and we are having a conversation just yesterday. I asked her, what bother her the most and she said that immigrants are taking all of the available jobs out there. Awww come on, most immigrants work getting paid min wage or even less and their jobs are more likely to be those job that no one wants to work (harvesting, construction worker, etc…)

She also said some immigrants come here with a criminal record…….if u had a criminal record, wouldn’t u want to move somewhere else?

They are ruining the economy? Okay that’s the only thing I agree, we can’t tell if they are paying their taxes or not, and yet they’re taking advantage if our public system, such as our children’s education. Sure this mean more fund for ESL students, but come on…we are on debt and we are paying millions of dollar to the War in Iraq. Why pay millions dollar for the useless war while we can use the money to help a human being in having better life?

The only thing that annoys me is that we are here paying our taxes and they are not. So in my opinion, to solver this, we should welcome illegal immigrants, register every one of them (not necessarily make them US citizen), and make sure they are paying their taxes.

Come on, we are all human….immigrants was the one who build this great country.
Think about it~

As an African American, should I attend an HBCU?

People who have attended HBCUs can give you a more detailed answer, but I will answer from the perspective of somebody who has a half dozen close friends and workplace colleagues who have attended HBCUs (Morehouse, Hampton, Howard undergrad and Howard Law). I have followed the career paths of these friends for the last ten to twelve years. Most of these people are black. One woman, five guys. One is an Asian-American guy, one is a white American guy. (Some but not all readers on Quora will not be aware that you don't "have to be black" to attend an HBCU).They all have found their experience with the HBCUs to be tremendously advantageous to their careers and social networks. They all enjoyed their time in the schools, all felt that they got top-notch educations, and all have said they have quite active alumni networks. The latter is something you might not think of much when you are still in high school, but it could be extremely important in helping you get jobs after you graduate, especially in a down economy. The people I'm referring to in this answer work as lawyers, lobbyists, federal government employees and contractors, and public relations executives, to give you a sense of the fields in which they work. One factor to keep in mind is where you think you may live after graduation. If you live later in a smaller city in the north without a large black population, there is a pretty good chance that a lot of employers and other people will not be familiar with even the top-ranked HBCUs. Very different situation if you live in an area like Washington, DC or Virginia, where there are tons of HBCU grads and employers are well aware that many HBCUs are terrific academic institutions. A Hampton or Howard or Spelman degree in these areas will be considered really impressive.Bottom line: continue researching, talk to employers as well as students, but all the grads I know give their HBCUs high marks.

African-American Fraternities!?!?

ALPHA PHI ALPHA - black and gold
Alpha Phi Alpha (ΑΦΑ) is the first intercollegiate fraternity established by African Americans. Founded on December 4, 1906, on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, as a social fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha has initiated over 175,000 men into the organization and has been open to men of all races since 1940. The fraternity utilizes motifs and artifacts from Ancient Egypt to represent the organization and preserves its archives at the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center.

OMEGA PSI PHI - the Q-dogs
Omega Psi Phi (ΩΨΦ) is an international fraternity, and was the first black national fraternal organization to be founded at a historically black college. Omega Psi Phi was founded on November 17, 1911, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. by three undergraduate students and one faculty advisor. The founders were Howard University juniors Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper and Frank Coleman. The first faculty advisor of the fraternity was Dr. Ernest Everett Just, who early on was accorded the status of founder by the three undergraduates. Each of the founders had distinguished careers in their chosen fields: Bishop Edgar Love, became Bishop of the United Methodist Church; Dr. Oscar Cooper, was a prominent physician who practiced in Philadelphia for over 50 years; Professor Frank Coleman, was the Chairman of the Department of Physics at Howard University for many years; and Dr. Ernest E. Just, was a world-renowned biologist.

Famous Brothers Include: Bill Cosby, Benjamin Hooks, Count Bassie

These are the only two I am familiar with having relatives in both. My father is the president of his chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha and did not pledge until he was a graduate student. It really depends on the chapter and that depends on where you wish to attend college. Good luck!

Why don't Black Americans take education seriously?

I will never understand why some Black Americans can allow mediocity. I remember growing up I was always called an oreo or white acting because I spoke properly and always did well in school. My dad is Caribbean and my mom is a Black American. Education is very important to them. Almost everyone in my Mom's family has a Bachelors Degree or higher. My Jamaican grandma used to hit me and my brothers with a switch if we spoke improperly. It seems like Black Americans are content with staying where they are and they make excuses for it. This girl at my job was like,"there ain't barely any rich Black people expect Oprah, Basketball players and those rappers." I was like, there are many wealthy Black Americans. My moms family is pretty well off.It bothered me that people always thought I was foreign because I wasn't like "most Black people". Why is acting ghetto, thuggish, and speaking poorly considered to be "black"? While speaking the King's English, getting an education is considered being White? Black Americans take many things for granted. Their ancestors the slaves had risked death and touture if they were caught reading and learning. Africans and Caribbeans and other immigrants come from huts and poverty, ethinic genocide and warfare and they still come to this country and become sucessful.Black Americans have greater oppurnities and resources in the year 2009 than most children in Africa and Asia, yet many Black Americans still complain about "racism" and I can't do this because I'm Black and how hard it is in the ghetto. American ghettos are considered nice compared to the barrios in Latin America, the favela is Brazil, and the slums in Africa and Asia. Black Americans never had to deal with someone kicking them out of their home because they were apart of a certain tribe or religion, never had their hands chopped off. Black Americans are very lucky.

If America realty is a place where only rich White Men can get ahead, Who gave Kamala Harris her break?

How did Stacy Abrams become a member of the Georgia house? \

How did Tim Scott get appointed to the US Senate for South Carolina by an Indian-American Female Governor of Uber-Racist South Carolina? And then those same Uber-Racists Re-elected him?

Who benefits by convincing you that you are a victim of the system? DEMONcrats.

How many people know that America does not have an official language?

Can people stop calling me " missy" and saying "I" need 2 learn English I am African American and unlike most of yall ancestors who willingly came here mine were forced so please skip the lecture about the constitution because that didn't do crap for me at first ok. My people where forced to learn english we didn't have a choice and I feel bad for Mexicans who should have one, because it's a simple language to learn, but as for the other languages good luck, because they're difficult. In Africa one country has over 12 indignious languages but they most likley have one common language that ties all of them together and that is what english is but not everyone can learn one of the hardest languages in the world. So excuse me for telling it how it is.

Do Nigerians living in America want to go back to Nigeria?

YES YES YES YES.I don’t know if you know this, but Nigerian Millennials are moving back home like we’re being chased out.First off, You have to realize the African mindset towards Immigration. We DO NOT go to foreign countries to die. We go there to make money and come back HOME to dieIn Africa, we use Asians as an example of what NOT to do. Which is go to the west, and stay there forever. have and raise kids there, and watch your grandkids who were born there. Most African Immigrants pack up and leave the second the youngest child is in college. They see it as “I have done my duty to them, now it is time for me”But thinks are changing with this new generation. We are not waiting to find wife/husband in America. We are not waiting to have kids and see them grow. Millennials are going back in Large numbersThe good thing about this day and age is that there are more opportunities to make a living in Naija besides working for government or in Oil sector. The startup age is realNigeria is pretty much the Silicon Valley of Africa. Personally, I know 7 people who have moved back home in 2017. I started a business this year, and my return home depends on it’s success.Fact is while in Naija, we don’t see the opportunities there. We just see Europe and America and what we can make of ourselves. A few years here, you see so many successful people, they realize. “I fit do this same shit for Naija”. Then they pack up, and move back. The grass is always greener on the other side. Then we come here, enjoy the grass, and realize all we had to so is add fertilizer and water to OUR OWN GRASS.God willing, If I achieve what I pray for, I dey move go Cross River, Buy land, and be one of those Naija people wey come back.EDIT.As a Northern Nigerian, based on what I have been reading here from our people, I guess I will just mind my business and move to the North. Because apparently, the educated Nigerians and the shit they spew here makes me realize as a Nation, there is pending civil war/ Separation. I lost half of my Paternal family during Biafra because my family lived in Elele. No reason to set myself up for failureInsanity is doing the same thing twice and expecting different results.
