Why is Quora more popular than Yahoo Answers? What elements make it the more popular Q&A site?

A couple of years back, early 2015 I guess, I wanted to know about the basics of big data and its importance in industry.I googled “What is Big data”The first link popped up was Wikipedia - I opened in a new tab and set it aside. The second link was from Yahoo answers. I opened and was looking for some useful information. There were answers like:I was confused, irritated and most of the answers didn’t answer the question. The next link which popped was from Quora.I could find answers like this:Answer was by Balaji Viswanathan (பாலாஜி விஸ்வநாதன்) sir. That is the moment I followed him and read his other answers too! And that was the moment i decided not to refer yahoo answers for anything in future.Unlike Yahoo answers, Why was the answer better? It summed up all the information - technical explanation with real life examplesPictures made it easier for me to connect with answerThe credential “Ran a Big data company” made me believe the answer is from someone trustworthy.Upvotes and comments of appreciation from people in related field made me feel secured about the answerComments were healthy and was debating its future application. So, with no further discussions, Quora is always better than Yahoo answers.

Where are my yahoo comment notifications?

When I comment on a yahoo article and someone replies or thumbs ups it I used to get a notification on the top right of my screen when looking at another yahoo article. Since yahoo's new design, this box no longer exists and I am therefore not getting my notifications. I know I should be getting notifications because I have checked back on my comments and seen replies, etc. Any ideas? The response to "where are my notifications" on yahoo's help page no longer exists. Go figure.

Is Quora just a glorified Yahoo! Answers?

Sure, in the sense that a Tesla is just a glorified golf cart.  At the most basic level, they both work on the same principle, but one has design, functionality, capability and even looks that's far beyond the other.   The problem here is that you have two competing definitions of the word "glorified".  It can mean something that's given glory for no good reason, or it can mean something that's been made glorious.  If you mean the first, then no, Quora isn't given glory for no good reason.  It's far more prestigious because it has a great deal more to offer.  The differences between the sites may be subtle (some are, and some aren't) but they cumulatively make a huge difference in the user experience (at least, they did in my case). If you're using the second definition, then the answer is yes.  Quora took the basic concept behind Yahoo Answers and they made it into something glorious.  And good for them.

Why does Yahoo Answers appear to be more racist than Quora?

Because it is. They also pick and choose which groups they want to be blatantly racist toward and which not. For example, against Indians, they don’t give a damn. You’ll always find a comment or answer with multiple thumbs up that is really mean to Indians. Against other Asians, they’re similar.Toward black people, they say incredibly racist comments but then retract it immediately when called out on it. Usually something along the lines of “I’m not racist but [insert ridiculously racist statements here.] Don’t worry, though, I have black friends.”Oh, and Native Americans? No mercy there :/Y!A has slowly become a white nationalist’s wet dream.I think that a reason is that Yahoo has been plummeting to its corporate death and people have been leaving the site as its technology becomes even more outdated and useless. Now, the only people who use it are old Americans, primarily baby boomers (the majority of whom are overwhelmingly white), who are frustrated with the world changing around them. And, since Yahoo is already doing terribly, they can’t risk to alienate their only customers. Verizon, for example, was thinking about purchasing Yahoo, but after realizing how outdated, useless, and unused its technology is (compared to, say, Apple, Google, Facebook, etc.), has reconsidered the deal.My 2 cents.Update: Verizon has bought Yahoo, and the latter continues to be a haven for white supremacists and other such racists.Just yesterday, they were blaming Puerto Rico for that hurricanes that hit it and destroyed its family, using racial slurs (calling them — using this to put it in context, not encourage this language — “lazy spics”) to blame them for a natural disaster that occurred through no fault of their own!!
