Yellowstone Fly Fishing

Is the fishing better inside or outside Yellowstone?

Depends on the type of fish you are fishing for. If you are bass fishing, then your best option will be to go to lake beryessa or Clear Lake. Otherwise, yellowstone is a great all around fishing destination.Bobbing for Bass

Would I be able to fish at a lake in Yellowstone National Park and then cook it in a hotspring?

Technically yes as the water in some are over 400 degrees Fahrenheit. But heres the problem:Most thermal features that dont take much time to walk to are monitored/covered with tourist(which means rangers), theyre fenced in and rather difficult to get to.As the ground around thermal features are quite thin and unforgiving you cant have a clear idea of where to walk and in goes your foot. You take off your sock and your skin comes with it. Is that worth cooking a fish in nasty acidic sulfer water? Not to me.Story time: us employees have a secret area in which we swim. A thermal features feeds into a cold river allowing you to swim. Me and some friends went here like we usually do and as we were leaving (with more alcohol in our blood) a friend steps on some crust and in goes his foot.We take him to the clinic in mammoth hot springs and after they treat him (his skin came off with his sock) a ranger comes in to ticket him for being in a “restricted area”. Talk about insult to injury.Bottom line: dont f#*k with animals/thermal features unless you prefer a painful death.

What is the best overnight hike in Yellowstone?

One of my favorite, especially if you like to fly fish, is the seven mile hike in to the base of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.

How long is a perfect trip through Yellowstone? Be realistic but not rushed. How many days in each part of the park?

Hi, Janet gave a great answer. From your photo I assume that you are considering a family trip with children. My experience is that kids get bored with the geysers/hot pools, etc. pretty quickly. Consider the following:Allow two days for geyser seeing. I’d focus on the Firehole River area, Old Faithful and Norris. If it is convenient the walk around the Grant Village area has some really cool features in a small area.Definitely have a beverage in the lobby of the Lake Hotel. You’ll feel like the great Gatsby. Do the daily tour of the Lake Hotel as well. Fascinating history.Take every ranger guided hike you can. The hike from the area just beyond the fishing bridge is fascinating.Rent a boat and tour around Yellowstone Lake. A couple hours would do it.Engage the kids to see if they can spot a license plate from every state. Pro tip - the parking lot at Old Faithful is the gold mine.Task the kids with starting an insect collection. Read up on aquatic insects. They are fascinating.Fish. If you don’t know how to fly fish, engage the staff at Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone.Bring binoculars.Hope your trip is fantastic.

What is the best fishing spot in the continental U.S.?

I love it right where I live.We have a natural complex of lakes and bayous that get flooded and restocked with fish on a regular basis. The complex has over a thousand miles of shoreline to fish and all manners of different waters all in the same area accessible by one boat launch. As anyone fishing with their buddy caught over 100 bass by 9.30 AM in the morning? Have you ever pulled up to one point and caught 67 by 7.30 AM? Have you ever fished a point where the bass was so thick you would foul hook several? Have you ever fished the bayou's with grass covering all but the main channel and caught over a 100 5 days in a row? This is what happens when the back waters come up and restock the complex. The Red and the Black Rivers flood into it and create not always. but at times the fishing that I have just described. Some years the fishing is not near that good due to the waters running out too fast and the fish going with it. But not last fall.We had major flooding in September due to downpours that created massive flooding and restocking of fish. The fishing that I described took place in Sep., Oct., and Nov. of 2008. And everyone that fished had a similar tale to relate. Nowhere in the US can you experience fishing like this.Or even Mexico, though the fish may be bigger. But to be honest, the fishing is down to average at this moment. Post spawn conditions and lack of a spring rise has not helped matters. But I call average when you have to fish until 12.00 to have a limit of decent bass.(10) But you live and breathe waiting for that rising water that brings the new fish in, and hope they don't go out with the water. They never all go out, but some years there are fewer fish then other years. I love these waters. And I feel blessed to be able to fish them on a daily basis if I desire. This is the best state in the US for freshwater bass ,bream, and crappie fishing. But, I hate to say this, but I got skunked a few weeks ago. Only the second time in the last 12 years that has happened.Sorry for the length, but I get carried away when the talk is about where I fish at.
