Why is the bond with a borderline so much stronger than with a non-borderline, even if the non-borderline loves strongly and gives you lots of attention?
I hate to say it but it's because romantic and friendship bonds with BPDs are unhealthy. In a normal, healthy relationship you are close to someone but you are still two separate people. In a relationship with a BPD though, the two people become enmeshed so closely that it can feel like you are part of each other.That is why it is common for people who have a Relationship with a BPD to end up with PTSD after they are devalued and the relationship ends. It feels like someone suddenly ripped out a part of yourself out of nowhere.If a BPD idealizes you, he or she will place you at the center of their lives, and implicitly demand that they become the center of your life as well. It's all very unhealthy.Edit: I forgot to add that due to a strange BPD side-effect called “Mirroring” (otherwise known as “The Chameleon Effect”), the person with BPD will try to emulate and become the perfect friend or partner to their loved one. This is yet another reason bonds with BPDs can appear initially to be uniquely strong and ideal.More specifically, the person with BPD will unconsciously change their likes and dislikes to better suit the person they idealize. It is a temporarily constructed identity that will change when their loved one is devalued and they find someone else to take the former loved one’s place. Once a new identity emerges, the person with BPD will forget the old identity and genuinely deny of ever having been different. Its extremely strange, but it is what it is.Supposedly, it has to do with the fact that people with BPD do not have a clear sense of self in combination with something called “emotional amnesia” which makes them forget how they feel about their loved ones and even themselves.
